New Skyfire III 15,6 getting HOT

Hello everyone,

I received my brand new skyfire 15,6" last monday. (i7-4710MQ, 2.50GHz; 8GB RAM; GTX 870M). Overall I'm very happy with it (review coming shortly), but I think I have a heating issue. I have been tracking temperatures with HWMonitor CPUID:

- Played simcity for about 1hour (at ultra settings): Maxt temp of the cores is 90-99ºC (however when I alt tab its usually around 70-80). GPU maxt temp usually around 70-80
- Played starcraft for about 1 hour (also at ultra): similar results, only a few degrees lower
- Played tomb raided for about 1 hour (at max settings): again, similar results.

I find it odd that the max temps are so high, but anytime i alt+tab to look at current temps, they are never that high... Maybe the software isnt reliable? (Tried to use speedfan but it kept crashing)

The laptop is new, and I have lifted it from the table so that it has good airflow. I wonder if there might be something wrong with the laptop? Or is it simply that I should lower the graphics settings (mind you, I didnt have any fps problems)

PS.: I'm in Spain, so RMA isnt really an option.

Thank you!

EDIT: I'm reading around a little bit... Could it be that I'm so dumb that the games are running with the integrated GPU and not the 870M? I asumed not as I doubt games would run on ultra like that, but worth mentionting (I cant check that right now as I'm not home)

are you using a laptop cooler? How about the temps of the gpu? Have you try using another programme to monitor temps?

I dont have a laptop cooler yet, but the laptop is lifted the table so that the air flows.

The GPU temps (max) are usually 70-80.

I havent tried a different program, I'll do that this afternoon.

BTW, do you think I should stop gaming until this is solved? I'm scare it might cause permanent damage

So I have tried other programs, and the results are similar. Cores are going up to 90 degrees and GPU is going up to 80 (generally the GPU is lower temp than the processor). You may see the results bellow:

I have made sure that the games are running with the nvidia card. Also, Ive lowered the settings, which gives me more fps, but doesn't reduce the temps a lot.

Are these temperatures normal? what can I do? Im scared of gaming fearing permanent damage :(

I would call pcs and get some thermal paste sent out and reapply. Sounds like the cpu temps are pushing up the system temps including graphics. Don't let it carry on cos it'll shorten the life of your chips.

Do you think that would help? I doubt I'll do a better job than them applying the thermal paste, seeing how they are experts and I havent done that before...

Its possible that the paste was not applied properly in the first place, there could be a bubble or not enough, does happen. It's very simple to apply, but if you're not happy doing it, then an rma would be best.

I have no problem doing it, it seems fairly easy (in any case RMA isnt an option since I'm from Spain). My concern is not with applying it, but rather with whether that will solve the problem or not.

I will try your suggestion and hope it works :)

Thanks a lot!

So I manned up and replace the thermal paste! I have to say, its quite scary thing to do to a brand new laptop when you have zero experience. However, it all went well and now my CPU temps are great! around 70º when gaming and 40-50 while in general use.

The only thing I've noticed is that now the GPU is a bit warmer... I assumed that this is because since the processor is no longer overheating, it is allowing the GPU to work a bit harder, thus its getting a bit hotter? (That is, while gaming, it goes up to 80º, if I turn the fan boost on, it quickly goes down to 70-72º). This is normal, right?

That's great news on the cpu temps, pleased.

I'm not so familiar with the gpu stuff, best wait for someone else to reply on that.
