Hi, looking at these specs. I have ddr4 ram from a previous build I'll be using. Also have a graphics card I might use but the i9 comes with integrated. Am I missing anything? My concern is I have a poor component that will let the whole thibg down.

Will be using PC for sql server queries on a large DB. THANKS!!

Yeah this is just a hard no mate

The i9 is a ridiculously hot chip you need highest of the high end cooling and even that isn't enough in certain circumstances. The Motherboard also isn't suitable for dealing with the massive power draw and heat generated from the 13900 and nor is the PSU suitable. That CPU cooler will die very very very quickly trying to cool that CPU

If you let us know what you'll be doing with the machine and how much you have to spend we can help you spec out something to suit your needs and budget but this build above I can't recommend in the slightest

Thanks for the reply. The pc is going to be running sql server with a large database. Complex queries are time consuming so trying to make it as fast as possible. They can take an hour or even more. I have 64GB of ddr4 I will be adding (already own). I was attracted to the i9 because of the high benchmark scores. Budget is a max 1200

For an 13900 the lowest I can get it too and still recommend would be £1400, the 5950X could be a very viable option though and it's coming in fairly cheap at the minute although there is no integrated graphics so you would need a GPU to display out.

The 5950X though would really depend on the RAM you have, Ryzen really need very very fast RAM to work at their most optimal capacity so I'd need to know what speed your current RAM is running at?

SQL Server is very enterprise software with a very enterprise pricing scheme. You pay a licence fee per core. Is that the case for you? If so, you will want to order AMD rather than Intel, because Intel's multi-core advantages come from having lots of smaller, one-thread cores, whereas AMD runs with all the cores being bigger and hyperthreaded.

SQL server Developer edition is free, or if you did want to put it into production can just buy server licence and the correct number of a CALs, its not mandatory to licence per core, depends on the application really as to which way you go.

Hi again Steveyg. What motherboard would you pair with the 5950X? 3000 mhz ram. And which cooler? You got me worried im going to fry my chip!

For a 5950X build and these uses this would be my bare minimum. Note you will need a graphics card to display out so if you have one laying around great but just factor that into any future costs. 3000Mhz RAM should do the job just fine, ideal would be 3600Mhz but 3000Mhz will do a solid job

If I could push the budget more I'd want the H115i cooler over the H100i, I'd want the STRIXX X570 board over the STRIX B550 and I'd want a larger PSU probably around 750W for these purposes but hey it is what it is
