noob needs new pc

So my laptop has died and I don't want to get it fixed as its 8yrs old and its a bag o`crap! I'm wanting to buy a desktop as I don't need to move it around. The thing is I have looked at this site and all the many options I could choose but I have no idea what I'm looking at to be honest. I'm currently at uni studying animation and need to put auto desk Maya 2013 on it so it needs to cope with that and as for gaming I play minecraft a lot so would want it to cope with that not that its a massively high spec game. I have Xbox and ps3 so would ideally want to play games like cod,bf3,assassins creed and newer games like these on steam so it would need to cope with those types of games. As I said I'm a student but I have a summer job so I'm able to afford anything up to £800 I would need monitor and mouse/keyboard. I would need office programmes like word and PowerPoint and the option to use other programmes like photoshop. It would need to last as long as possible as until I finish my degree I'm going to be broke
Any help anyone could give me will be great fully received or to point me in the right direction would be grand

I've worked up an Intel and amd option for you. The amd will be better for games but I'm guessing, and it is a bit of a guess, that the Intel spec will perform better in Maya.

Both kruppsy's specs are good. I'd personally go for the latter of his suggestions (for the better GPU.) The AMD processor is solid, however I'd consider another case if you live in a carpeted/dusty flat/smoke or have pets. I have an inwin case which i like very much, but dust is a real problem and it requires a lot of cleaning.

Here's a little fruity option for about forty quid over budget. You really need to see the case to get an idea of how cool this is



This is about the height of an xbox 360 and is pretty portable. It has a solid processor and a decent gpu that should satisfy your current gaming habits for a good few years.
