Not seeing all power options available - options are hidden in the registry, needs to be manually reenabled.

Hi,

Hoping someone can help me here. I'm not sure why but I'm not seeing all power options available to me when I look at the "Change Advanced Power Settings" option in Control Panel > Power Options > Edit Plan Settings.

These screenshots are what I do see:

Can anyone assist? I spent about an hour on the phone to PCS Support but the technician said he wasn't able to do anything more in this situation and this is all I would see. He put it down to something to do with Microsoft removing these options?

My W10 is fully up to date and as far as I'm aware all of my drivers are up to date but I've got a BSOD with a driver_power_state_failure error message. Trying to figure out why and what can be done to resovle.

You'll need to link your full spec.
Im aassuming youve tried the admin permissions link?

Have you checked your chipset drivers?

Thanks for the speedy response. What do you mean admin permissions link? Sorry for the dumb question. I've checked all of my drivers in Device Manager by going into each section and then "update drivers". It says I'm on the best drivers available and Windows Update tells me it's fully up to date with all drivers up to date too.

I can't attach my dump file from C>Windows>Mini Dump as it says I need to ask an admin to attach or open this file.

Can you post a screenshot of your optional updates page of windows update?
What other settings are you expecting to see?

I was referring to the blue text with the little admin shield next to it.
With regard to chipsets, its best to get them direct from the manufacturer, AMD have a handy little tool you can download ( https://www.amd.com/en/support )and it will do the work for you, with the chipset drivers there can be additional power options/profiles (for example, its how i got the "AMD High power" profile for mine.

I'll give that a look after W10 21H2 update is done.

Windows 10 21H2 has just popped up so I'll do that and then report back.

I am expecting to see other settings such as this, taken from my work PC:

Looking online, at this link in particular there's a potential fix that says to change PCI Express and Link State Power to Maximum but I don't have those options on my laptop. I got this Driver_power_state_failure error after I put my laptop to sleep by going to Start Menu > Power Button > Sleep, going off for dinner and then coming back. After about 10 minutes of use the BSOD came up.

Desktops have different power options to laptops, they won't be the same.

Okiedokie, thought they would have been similar, so my mistake and misunderstanding there.

Yes, sure, if I go into Windows Update, this is what I see - just did the 21H2 update.

On most laptops you manage power settings from the management driver, which ties into the windows controls, and usually has more functionality. Each chassis will have different power options depending on the manufacturer.

Surely, I should have more options than I see in the standard Advanced Power Settings page though? Or are you saying it's fine and I need to manage it via the slider when clicking on the battery? Sorry, I'm not quite understanding.

Okay, I understand now and apologies for misunderstanding, if I click on the shield, nothing changes. I've used the link you've said and something has updated so pending this restart, let's see what happens.

Just really concerned with these BSOD's and I can't seem to figure out why!

What options are you guys seeing on your laptops? If you don't mind me asking, this is what I see, High Performance was something the PCS Tech managed to add in for me but not sure if it makes any difference!

High Performance is something I can delete but the other two I can't which is what I expect to see.

As said, it's different for every chassis, it's down to the config the manufacturer puts in their drivers, you'd adjust power settings in the management driver, not in windows.

So this is my management driver

Ah, see I don't have that. I have this within my Control Center and then if I mouse over my battery, I have this, same as what's in my power settings really:

And in control Panel, Balanced, AMD Ryzen Balanced and High Performance (the tech from PCS managed to get High Performance back - but no idea if it actually makes a difference).

Sorry, you keep saying you're not seeing settings, but what settings are you missing? Have you used a laptop before? They're not the same as a desktop, you won't see the same options as power wise they're very different.

These are called power plans. You can configure any plan you like and call it whatever you want on the left where it says "create power plan"

The ones you have at the moment are the basic and high performance which is a pre set profile by the manufacturer within their drivers.

The AMD one is AMD pre set for high performance from the chipset driver.

But you can set any you like.

But on a laptop, you tend not to use the windows settings, as that's what the management driver does far better based on that specific chassis. It's far more targetted than any windows settings. You don't just change the battery settings, you change the performance modes, you can adjust anything really, the management driver ties into most settings on the chassis.

Every laptop has a management driver, sometimes unique to the manufacturer, sometimes unique to the model range.

Yes, I have used a laptop before bud, I use them daily along with desktops when in the office as I work in the tech sector, so some offence taken even though I'm sure you didn't mean to come across that way, admittedly I've not owned a gaming laptop, let alone a custom laptop, so this in particular is a first for me. Comparing it to my old laptop (HP Pavilion 15 on the same W10 build as this new one but the physical hardware is different), here's what I'm missing when I look in Control Panel > Power Options > (Choose any plan, use Balanced for argument sake) > Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings:

Hard Disk
Internet Explorer
Wireless Adapter Settings
USB Settings
PCI Express
Processor Power Management
Multimedia Settings
AMD Graphics Power Settings - This is probably specific to my old HP.

Hopefully we're on the same page now? Apologies if this was unclear in previous replies.

Ah, ok, it wasn't at all clear what you were expecting, sorry, my bad, I see what you mean now.

Did you install windows or did you order with a copy? You didn't include that in your specs, it's always worth posting the full specs.

Yes, ordered with Windows. I had an issue with the OS randomly giving me problems so I sent the whole device back to PCS who reinstalled Windows via the BIOS. After I got it back with a few days testing, I noticed the above things missing, phoned up support and they were unable to get them back and put it down to a Windows issue.
