Laptops are always run a lot warmer than desktops, I don't know what temperatures are normal for laptops these days, is it actually shutting itself down from overheating? I presume you have a cooling fan pad to put underneath it already - some of them are good, some not so great, so it may be a question of just getting a better laptop cooling pad. Another issue with laptops is that they too can fill up with dust, but opening them up to dust them out is not recommended as it can void various warranties, and it's just not as easy as with desktops. Still an option to consider if you have someone around that can do that for you.

Well the laptop itself is either 3 or 5 years old so the warranty is well and truly gone! haha

The cooling pad is ok, not great but seems to lower the temp by 20c at idle.

Dust is most definately not an issue with this one, the DC jack has broken twice now, so iv taken it apart numerous times (to the point of having the mobo on its own) and soldered a new one on, did that today and gave it a nice old clean out while i was at it, hence the whole temperature issue coming back to me!

A friend mentioned that it can be to do with the RAM? He said he bought new ram and the overheating issue stopped, any truth in this?
Mine has 2x2GB sticks in it.

No idea on the RAM, I know my old laptop ran at similar temps but it was probably stuffed with dust-bunnies. I've seen people mod their laptop cases to have more holes so the air from the cooling pads gets directly inside rather than just into the plastic casing, I suppose that could be an option if you don't mind cosmetic damage (edited to add: and of course, more dust and dirt to clean out, probably not a sensible option, lol).

Oh, and I think it depends on the processor, but 70c isn't that bad, as far as I know (though best get someone more in the know to answer it), unless it's just shutting down on you or running super slow.
