Opinions on this spec for 3D rendering (still and animation - main focus) plus VR (secondary focus)? Thanks!

That's not how turbo boost works under all-core load. 4.6Ghz is a max for lighter workloads. Under all multithreaded loads, you should expect close to 4.3GHz

I would suggest a better case with better airflow. e.g. Define S if you are looking for something quiet.

A better CPU cooler e.g. H100x.

Why the GPU? I take it the rendering is all on the GPU?

A better quality PSU. e.g. TXm

What is the budget? When you say VR, you mean VR gaming...?

I'm assuming that you have additional storage drives you plan to fit, what are you planning to use for the Operating System? If you were going to use the ADATA one in the build I'd suggest an M.2 NVMe drive instead

Thanks for the quick replies.

The rendering will be CPU-based but I like the cost-effectiveness of this GPU, I may use it for VR gaming or design projects in Unreal so I think it's worth it anyway.

I'll use Windows 10 which I purchased previously. I will have additional external USB3 drives where the render resources will be stored so I can do with a 250Gb internal hard drive.

I definitely want to upgrade the components you mentioned to avoid any hard crashes and regrets :), so thanks for the input. If you have any more suggestions please let me know.

The budget limit is around £2200 with VAT.

You should have a clearer plan for the GPU. Since while it's cost effective it may not be ideal for VR gaming.

No much point buying a ~£250 GPU, not using it for a while, finally using it, then realising it's not up to scratch for what you want and by then there are better £250 GPUs out anyway. If you're going to make use of it soon, and are happy it will give decent performance for your specific uses, then fine :) But best to be sure you're clear on that before spending the cash.

Running projects off external USB drives sounds like it could hurt performance a lot. Perhaps best to have the projects on internal storage and use USB for backups?

Maybe something like:

Many thanks for the update!

I will do most of the upgrades you mentioned here, except the RAM clock speed and the internal hard drive. The gains would be marginal for these.

Cheers!

AMD chips benefit greatly from increased RAM speeds. The plateau for Ryzen 3000 series is 3600MHz, so 3200 is going to make a substantial difference over 2400.

Thanks, I'll keep it in mind about RAM speed.

From what I know the render resources get fully copied into RAM before the render begins so it's only slow in the initial phase which lasts 1-2 minutes longer. I'm not running any software off USB, everything will be installed on the internal SSD.
