After almost a year of research and umming and ahhing between at least 5 different computers I have just completed payment on a new Optimus II with the following spec :
Chassis & Display Optimus II: 15.6" Matte 95% Gamut LED Widescreen (1920x1080) (£79)
Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-2670QM (2.20GHz) 6MB
Memory (RAM) 8GB SAMSUNG 1333MHz SODIMM DDR3 MEMORY (2 x 4GB)
Graphics Card nVIDIA® GeForce® GT 555M - 2GB DDR3 Video RAM - DirectX® 11
1st Hard Disk 120GB KINGSTON HYPERX SSD, SATA 6 Gb/s (upto 555MB/sR | 510MB/sW)
2nd Hard Disk 500GB WD SCORPIO BLACK WD5000BPKT, SATA 3 Gb/s, 16MB CACHE (7200 rpm)
Memory Card Reader Internal 9 in 1 Card Reader (MMC/RSMMC/SD: Mini, XC & HC/MS: Pro & Duo)
Thermal Paste ARCTIC MX-4 EXTREME THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COMPOUND
Sound Card Intel 2 Channel High Definition Audio + MIC/Headphone Jack
Network Facilities GIGABIT LAN & WIRELESS INTEL® ADVANCED-N 6230 (300Mbps) + BLUETOOTH
USB Options 2 x USB 3.0 PORTS + 2 x USB 2.0 PORTS AS STANDARD
Battery Upgrade to 62.16WH 6 Cell Lithium-ION Battery
Power Lead & Adaptor 1 x UK Power Lead & 90W Adaptor (GT 540M) / 120W Adaptor (GT 555M)
After reading pages of information on this computer my only reservation about it is the enormous power brick which comes as standard. At home, where I will do all of my gaming I have no problem with leaving the laptop plugged into this beast, however I also purchased this laptop for work with its portability and comparative longer lasting battery in mind. The large size and weight of this power brick is a serious drawback to travelling.
Does anyone here have any experience of using an alternative for travel? I have been reading extensively on the Notebook Review Sager 5195 / Clevo W150HR forums, and the US Clevo reseller Mythlogic have thoroughly tested the CoolerMaster NSA 95 on their models with apparently no adverse effects to the computer whatsoever.
I notice that PC specialist also supply a 90W adapter. Would this be OK to use with the Optimus II? how much would it cost? Will its lead fit the Optimus? what would be the consequences of using a sub-wattage power supply?
I wont be gaming, or doing anything else particularly intensive whilst plugged in to this, just need to be able to use office, CS5 and lightroom whilst at work; in fact I'll disable the GT 555 and only be using integrated graphics.
