optimus iv fans constantly spinning

Hi all,

My optimus IV fans seems to be going mental all the time these days, currently all im trying to do is watch iplayer but the fan noise is drowning out the sound on my laptop, same with if i just watch something on VLC. It's also struggling with what I would say are fairly basic to moderate games such as empire total war or diablo. If I run these on medium or even sometimes low setting the laptop just overheats and cuts out. Am I being unrealistic here expecting it to run chrome smoothly without having the fan going mental?

Also just looking at task manager my most intensive program at the moment is chrome in terms of memory usage at 100 000k and my memory usage is at 70%

Get a copy of HWMonitor from http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor-pro/versions-history.html and check your temperatures,it may just be running hot. If it is getting hot it's probably dust build up inside. So get a can of compressed air made for cleaning computers (most good PC shops have them) open the case up and with the air and a soft brush clean away all the dust and fluff that you'll find inside. Pay particular attention to the blades of the fan, the air vents in the case and the fins on the cooling pipe close to the fan.

It might also be worth getting a laptop cooling stand if you don't already have one.

Thanks for the reply looking at that program the processor seems to be idling around 61 degrees with the graphics card at around 49. I have already cleaned the fans out they werent particularly bad tbh and it sits on a desk all day so should have ample ventilation. Just as a side not I have pretty much the same spec as you apart from having 2 hard drives one SSD and 500gb scorpio.

again just downloaded wow and playing on good settings it BSOD after 2 minutes of playing. My friend has the previous iteration of the optimus and he plays at ultra settings with relative ease not sure why my laptop is struggling so much.

those idle temps are really quite high, the CPU especially, but even the GPU shouldn't be near that.

If those are true idle temps i.e less than a couple of per cent CPU load then those temps are worrying and do need sorting out. My first though is the cooler has come loose or perhaps it needs new thermal compound applied. In any case the procedure is the same. You need to take the heat sink off, clean the old paste and re apply new. If your sure its not dust and the fan is spinning correctly, which it sounds like it is because of the noise it makes, that is your next best bet for a solution.

Not sure what the internals of the optimus looks like but I have seen laptops where its a real pain, other are a simple job. Open it up and see if it looks like you can just undo a few screws, if not might be worth getting a local shop to do it.

Well it's still under warranty and I live 15 mins away from PC specialist so might give them a call. I went for the upgraded compound when I had it built as well lol.

I would be surprised if the compound had gone bad. If its still under warranty get pcs to have a look, those temps ain't normal.

I've reopened it up today and given it a clear out again it wasn't too bad in there. I did this after it shut itself down after 2 mins of playing wow, interestingly the thing that felt the hottest was the hard drive which I pulled out and you can see at the top, I'm not really sure whats going on with it but I know it shouldn't be struggling playing wow.

Hello there, system looks okay on the inside, what speed does the fan turn at?

I don't seem to have any software which will tell me that Information. When I am playing world of warcraft the fans spin up and the heat gets to about 80 degrees at teh moment and is still turning off. Like I said my friend has a previous model of optimus and his runs fine, mine is just an updated version of his and can't run anything.

So this is what is coming up, I never really read it before but I was getting irritated after rebooting and checking the core temps are only as high as 80 which isn't great but by no means bad enough to cause this.

If you cant read the photo it says,

attempt to reset driver display and recover from time out failed.

Today it ran okay for a few hours and now its just back to blue screening every 5 mins. I thought it was overheating due to the fans spinning but now thinking it may be another issue anyone have any ideas?

Have you done a clean installation of the drivers? To do that uninstall the old ones first before you re install the new ones.

That screen is saying to me that the GPU became unresponsive, windows gave it a second or so to restart and become responsive and it didn't. hence the blue screen telling you about it. That could be because of a corrupted driver or temp problems. Try a clean installation, if that doesn't fix it then I would be getting some new thermal grease and re applying it to both GPU and CPU
