hi all,

i want to reinstall windows 10 on my optimus vii.... get rid of the uefi setup, plus when i got it from PCS, i set it up with my user name, but later i installed an app from windows store, and windows store made me enter my email addy.
after rebooting , i log into my machine using my email addy, but i have a seperate user account with my previous username which i cant access for some reason - no major concern, but id like to tidy that up.

my question ...

in disk management, i have 3 partitions (setup by PCS before shipment) - 1- 260mb efi system partition, 2- c: ~ 465gb 3 - 500mb recovery partition
- is the recovery partiton created by PCS or the windows install?
- has it got anything on there that i may need - do i really need it?
- can i just diskpart, clean, and repartition.

also, just to confirm, if i disable uefi in bios, is there any other settings i need to change in bios such as secure boot etc etc.

has anyone done what i wish todo?
any problems with drivers. - the drivers are listed in my PCS download page with numbers, 1,2,3 .... but it doesnt look like the correct install order for the drivers?

When you logged on to the store you need to select the (almost hidden) option to logon to just this application, that way your Windows logon is not changed to your Microsoft ID.

If you go into Settings > Users you should be able to specify how you want to logon (I'm not running Windows 10 any more so I can't be more specific). I'm sure there's an option in there to use your Microsfot account or not...

my question ...

Personally I would keep the recovery partition. AFAIK it was put there by PCS so that you can easily restore the laptop to the factory condition. Of course, if you never plan to do that again you can safely delete it. The UEFI partition can be deleted as can the C: partition. Create a single partition in the unallocated space that results from these deletions.

When you disable UEFI in the BIOS also disable SecureBoot.

has anyone done what i wish to do?

I'm sure many have. I did exactly this on my Optimus IV last year when I upgraded to Windows 10. I've since gone back to Windows 8.1 because of the NVIDIA Optimus issue and also because Windows 10 is still clearly a work in progress.

Generally it's best to let Windows Update install all your drivers - you can't stop Windows 10 doing this in any case. So install Windows 10 and then run Windows update until there are no more updates found. Then check in Device Manager for any devices that have the yellow triangle and manually install the appropriate Windows 10 driver for those. Lots of people (including me) have run into problems manually installing drivers, the only possible exception is the chipset driver. You might want to install that manually first before you connect to Windows Update.

Concerning driver installation order, the general advice is to install chipset first, after that the order is not terribly important, however you should usually install the VGA driver before the NVIDIA driver (which I don't see in your list, get it from NVIDIA in that case) and the LAN driver before the WLAN driver.

I'm sure others will have good advice for you too. :)

users - i realised that after it happemed. but still could not access the user name i created on first startup of laptop.

disabling the uefi - this will render the existing partitions unreadable and i will have to repartition? etc . .... from memory i recall disabling eufi once just to check, and that rendered my partitions unreadable - could be wrong?

is there a way of getting older versions of the nvidia drivers .... i had the blue screen problems and the sleep problems when i first got the laptop, but i updated my nvidia drivers and since then my windows 10 has been fine, no crashes, no issues, i am assuming the driver version i have is stable?

so why is the wlan and vga drivers in several parts of 199mb each? i am assuming i would have to merge them, ive never know wlan and vga driver to be more than 3000/400 mb big, this makes them ~ 1 gb??? that cant be right?

Since you're planning a reinstall this isn't really a problem I think? After the reinstall, when you access the store be sure to only login for that application.

Yes it will. When you boot the Windows 10 installation media choose a custom install, you can delete the existing partitions from there and create a new one.

You can get older drivers from the NVIDIA website. Just search for drivers for your model of card and you'll see a list of previous (and the latest) drivers.

I've no idea, I've not seen that before. As I said earlier, it's better with Windows 10 to allow Windows update to install all the drivers that it can (except possibly chipset) and not to install them manually unless you have to.
