Optimus VIII i7 7700HQ High Clock Speeds

Hello all,

When running 'Balanced' in Clevo Control Center my CPU tends to boost and hang up to around 3.6Ghz even when carrying out simple web browsing tasks. This causes the laptop to heat up significantly and the fans to become quite loud.

Setting 'Power Saving' mode rectifies this by lowering clocks to 1.8Ghz and below, but I'd like to know if it's possible to limit the clock speed during 'Balanced' mode, as I'm really not keen on the 7700HQ running at 3.6Ghz for simple tasks. Switching between the two settings is a bit of a pain!

Thank you.

You could also try modifying the System Cooling Policy in the Power Options. If the policy is set to 'Active' then the fan speed is increased before the CPU is slowed when things get hot (that's the default I think). If you set the policy to 'Passive' then the CPU is slowed before the fan speed is increased when things get hot.

Thank you both, your suggestions proved useful.

I've set the maximum processor state to 98%, this restricts the maximum clock-speed to 2.7Ghz- I wish I could get it to the chips advertised 2.8Ghz, but, for some reason, 99% power state causes the CPU to still boost up to 3.6Ghz 'turbo'. Is there any way to remedy this?

Out of interest, what's telling you it's 2.7GHz? If it's Task Manager, it's probably not quite right anyway.

Something like CPU-Z would be more accurate.

I use MSI Afterburner and Riva Tuner (just for monitoring purposes, no overclocking or voltage changes etc). I've set up an onscreen display that shows temps and clockspeed.

CPU-Z shows the same speeds when running side by side.
