Order got amended

Just received notification my order's changed from i7 2720 to i7 2760... The base speed of 2760 is 2.40GHz but does it have turbo boost? Looks like it's a slower processor if it doesn't have turbo boost. :taz:

The 2760QM is faster than the 2720QM, otherwise we wouldn't have upgraded your order.

The processor is 2.40GHz without turbo boost.

Now you're confusing me. Are you saying it's 2.40GHz normally when turbo boost isn't on or are you saying it doesn't have turbo boost at all? When the 2720QM is maxed out it's 3.30GHz for one core. Even if all four cores are used it's still able to reach 3.0GHz.

The i7-2760QM is suppose to have turbo boost but PCS still didn't say it has turbo boost on their website, and even the above comment seems carefully worded. So it's faster, but that can refer to base speed. Can PCS answer yes the i7-2760QM for Vortex II 17inch laptop has turbo boost to 3.50GHz or no it doesn't have turbo boost? A yes or no is more clear than a 'without turbo boost' which can be interpreted in more than one way. I'd be upset if other companies are offering the i7-2760QM with turbo boost but PCS in particular doesn't have it.

And sorry for being a pest. I'd rather be positive it's got turbo boost than be a whining customer later on.

Hmmm. Maybe I should go for a 500GB 7200rpm instead of 750GB 7200rpm, then up processor to i7-2820QM instead. Decisions decisions. Is it true if I manage to get hold of an Alienware 17inch case I can send it to PCS to use instead of the Vortex II case? Time to do some hunting.

Intel i7-2720QM vs i7-2760QM

My order also got amended and I was persuaded by this post that the performance of the 2760 would be at least equivalent to the 2720. However, looking at the CPU benchmark website http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html it appears the 2760 is only about half as fast as the 2720. The 2630 is around £100 cheaper and according to the CPU benchmarks also over 50% faster. Is there something wrong with the benchmarking or have Intel pulled a fast one i.e. keeping processor prices the same but dropping performance by half?

To answer my own post I downloaded the trial benchmarking software at CPU benchmarks and it benchmarked my CPU at 8244 which is 15% better than the score for the 2720. Seems like the benchmark result on the CPU benchmarks website is wrong for the 2760. So panic over!!! Nice one Intel/PCS.
