Hello I have an nVidia GTX 460 and I read somewhere that you can ramp it up to the level of a 470 if you overclock it right. Firstly I am not planning to do that yet, I have only just got my computer and I dont want my warrantee wasted so I would rather wait until 1 or 2 years from now when I know I'll get a new one. But I was still wondering how does it work.
For example I have some VTune thing in which apparently I can control fans and there's a slider for the core speed. So firstly, can a graphics card have any core speed? What I mean is if I changed it from 700 to 721, would that necessarily become unstable? Is there like some increment that I should go up in like in 10's to keep it stable?
Also what does stability really mean? If it's unstable will my GPU explode or just start working unreliably and less powerfully than before.
Since there are also things like memory clock, should I change those too to keep in step with the core clock?
And finally, I heard about those factory overclocked cards like the Palit Sonic Platinum. Basically looking at pictures it seems to be the same card just with a higher clock.
Does that mean if I set my nVidia (also a Palit) to the same clock and memory speed it will be practically the same card or are there some other components that a Platinum has over a normal Sonic card?
Thanks and sorry for the page of questions. I tried googling all this but I can't find anything to answer the questions I hope you guys can help.
