Overheating problem.

Looking for some advice on overheating issue, idle temps look okay, but while playing Farcry 3 my R9 280X GPU is hitting 80C and the AMD PHENOM II X4 970 processor 70C,and the top of ny case, the CM690 gets pretty hot
According to what information I can find, neither the GPU nor the CPU should go over about 65C on load.
I've tried different monitoring software with the same results.
I installed the graphics card about3 weeks ago,but the issue only started last night.
It makes no difference if I lower the resolution or settings, and the case looked pretty clear of dust when I was installing the card.
Any help much appreciated.

What CPU cooler do you have? Have you try changing the fan speed on the gpu?
"TITAN FENRIR EVO EXTREME HEATPIPE CPU COOLER"
I haven't tried to change the fan speed, whats the best way going about that?

If you haven't done it in a while you could try repasting the CPU. I think catalysist allows you to change the fan speed.

Yeah,I was thinking about re-pasting,hate doing that though,I'll try giving the case a really good clean out first, hopefully that will help.

For your CPu, I would personally give it a re-paste. Noctua's thermal paste (or MX 4) is what I would recommend (both noctua+mx4 can also be used on GPU cores). Along with Artics thermal paste cleaner and purifier.

As for your gpu, try using software like evga precision, asus gpu tweak, or msi afterburner (watch for a sneaky program called riva tuner though, sneaks its way in with the installs)

then create a custom fan profile in the settings tab and speed up your gpu fan a bit. This should help a bit.

I've also read that re pasting the new AMD cards really helps. But as you know this may void your warranty. What brand have you got? (if you do this, use the noctua/mx4 paste)

You said in your PM that, during far cry 3, it jumps to the desktop?
1, Are you on win 7?
2, is it like minimizing the game?
3, do you get a "would you like to change the colour scheme warning?
4, is it a 2gb card?
5, if yes to all the above, This page may be of use - http://superuser.com/questions/3145...e-color-scheme-to-improve-performance-warning

I hope this is useful.

CPU temps are fine after cleaning CPU fan and heatsink,no way am I going to attempt to re-paste a new card:)
1: Yes.
2: I said sometimes it restores down to window mode when playing farcry, haven't really tried any other games with the new card yet.
3: No.
4: 3GB PowerColor R9 280X.

From what i hear the new AMD series cards all run a lot hotter than previous AMD cards, not sure if your temperatures are too hot or normal for that card though.

That's the R9 290X cards,according to what I can find,the R9 280X shouldn't go over 70C on full load.

I found a Hexus review on the r9-280x with far cry 3 on 72'C but not sure whether that's the highest or average. Are the 80'C you getting average or highest temp?

Highest, well it's hit 82,I don't think the log file of the monitor software I use (GPU-Z) gives the average temps.
