Panic Moment - Labtop Wouldn't Start

HI

Hopefully this was just a 'one off' but this morning when I went to turn my labtop on it wouldn't start, it seemed totally dead. It had been plugged into the mains overnight, though switched off at the mains. This morning when I pressed the power button on the labtop (after switching on at the mains) the labtop wouldn't start. Nothing was happening. I unplugged from the mains and tried again. Nothing. I removed the battery, replaced it and without plugging back into the mains I pressed the power button, and this time the labtop came to life. I plugged back into the mains and then shut down and pressed the power button to restart, and all worked well, the labtop started up. The battery is 100% charged. Was this just my labtop being lazy and wanting to stay in bed? Has anybody had this happen before? Is it something I should worry about? Thank you.

I would suggest keeping an eye on it so to speak and if it happens again getting in touch with PCS to let them know. Obviously it shouldn't 'not start' if its fully charged etc.

Had you moved it after switching it off?

Hi Steaky360

Many thanks for your reply. No, the labtop hadn't been moved. Hopefully it was just 'one of those things' and has never happened before in the 2 weeks I have had it. I'll keep an eye on it and it if happens again I will contact PCS.

Do check back here later as another forum member might know more or be able to suggest a better method of diagnosis!

Not sure if this applicable to your problem Myrm:

The power button needs to be held until the laptop comes on (around 1-2 seconds.) I do remember on my old Dell just quickly touching the power button would turn it on, had me confused a few times with my Optimus IV when I first got it, thought the bloody thing was broke. XD

Ok, this is a guess, but an educated one ;)

When you leave the charger plugged in but switch off the mains there is a very short period where there is still some charge in the charger, but this quickly diminishes until it's dead. It may be that the charging circuits in the laptop got confused somehow by the diminishing charger output and thought there was some sort of unknown power problem and so refused to start the laptop again.

Removing the battery depowered everything (except for the battery-backed BIOS) which caused it to forget about the possible power problem and so it started normally.

I would suggest removing the laptop charger before switching off the mains in future. :)

KK, sorry for replying to the above replies until now. Thank you for those of you who replied.

Well, the same thing happened again this morning and this time I did not have to remove the battery but did remove the mains. Both times I have powered down the labtop at night, left the mains plugged but the mains switched off at the wall. Ubuysa, I note your suggestion above and will try your suggestion tonight. I note that once I have the labtop booted up, if I then power off with the mains plugged in, I have no proplems rebooting. It seems to not like 'cold starts' with the mains plugged in. I will try from cold again tomorrow following your advice and I'll report back. :)

KK, so this morning was the all telling test. I had shut down Windows and de-powered the labtop, but instead of leaving the adaptor plugged in over night, with the power isolated, I removed the adaptor before shutting down. This morning I restarted the laptop, before plugging it back in, and the labtop turned on when I pressed the power button with no proplems at all. Tomorrow I will try the same just in case it was a fluke.

It hasn't happened again even when I replicated the circumstances around which it occurred. The labtop must have just not wanted to get out of bed those mornings >.<
