Have you added any new hardware or programs ? is everything up to date drivers etc ? you could try restarting see if it sorts itself if not run a virus scan just incase you have a nasty on there.

I turned it off than on and the shutting down took 3 mins ! And its wierd because it said microsoft security essentials stopped working so there might be a virus ill check now just have to wait through to terrible boot time :(

hmmm now when I boot it up nothing comes up it doesn't do the windows logo swirl and stuff.... Still taking ages installed the anti virus and scanned nothing there. Hmmm what drivers could be doing this ? they are all installed properly

That was a very quick virus scan have you not got anything on your HDD apart from your OS or have you only done a quick scan ?

It was a quick scan because I haven't downloaded anything except from minecraft and google chrome. It seems to of gone to the normal speed now :) yey but still no windows swirl on the boot :( Thanks for the help mate

Very strange but sounds like something might be going faulty juse see what happens, if it goes slow again seen as you don't have much on there you could try a clean install.

May i just put my two pence in there?

You should Boot in safe mode with networking and run MSCONFIG:
there you can google all the programs listed in the startup and see if there are any unessary programs that might be slowing things down and prevent them from launching when you boot windows in normal mode. (i normally limit the start up to graphic card drivers/programs any sound card drivers/programs as well as firewalls and anti virus software by unchecking everything else)
i have spotted a few nastyies here before even running a virus scan!

once you have done that DEFRAG (i recomend MYdefrag or jkdefrag) your hard drive (BEFORE ANY VIRUS SCAN)
this will help the hard drive run faster (by rearranging and organising the files on your hard drive)and will prevent any hard drive based slow downs and will also speed up your virus scan a bit too

Next you should run your virus scan this should be a boot time scan or a full scan and they should be set to full sensitity!
(if you have avast i recomend using a boot time scan this will scan your hard drives before windows boots fully thus preventing the nasties from relocating themselves)
