PCS laptop at Currys/PCworld

It's probably only news to me but when i was browsing the PC World site last night i spotted a PCS laptop for sale !
It's called the Vortex IV RS-880 and based around the 4710 MQ cpu and GTX 880 processor. Also seems rather pricey as you might expect at pc world . I didn't realise PCS sold gear from other outlets, i thought it was all in house.

News to me too. I didn't know or expect that you could buy a PCS PC anywhere else.

Just checked and you are right, there they are :)

Its good business.

I haven't speced one like for like yet but they recon they can have it delivered to my local store in about 24 hours plus i get some discount at work for using currys.

Think my long service award come up next year so that puts a PC Specialist PC back on my books.

Oh dear....

What concerns me most is that PC world staff are going to be selling these machines... I specced a couple of the builds and they come out about +10%, so not too bad but obviously not the best. But yeah, the fact PC world staff will be selling them does concern me somewhat...

Exactly! And the add ons like insurance or extension of warranty which I doubt will be as price competitive as PCS. When you get the machine who do you contact for support?

When you get the machine who do you contact for support?

It looks like the machines come with the welcome pack, going by the website anyway, so in that would be the contact info for PCS. The warranty looks like it could be just 'standard, but it doesn't say.

And with a three-year labour warranty on top of the one-year parts guarantee, you can expect high-end and reliable enthusiast-level gaming for the foreseeable future.

I do use PC world sometimes, its just convenient to go and grab whatever you need. However any 'advice' I have received or overheard has often been fairly useless, not that I blame the employees who are now expected to know everything about washing machines to 4k TV's it can't be easy.

Is that despair that anyone would choose to browse at PC World, or because PCS have gone over to the dark side :D

I go there to feel smug about the laptop I got at PCS, sort of reverse schadenfreude :p

Now you can go there to feel smug you got it 10% cheaper :)

I tend to go there to look at the gaming peripherals that are often on display. Although, its not somewhere that i would specifically plan to go, only pop if i was nearby.

I actively discourage people buying deskys and lappys from Currys. Unless, they are on such a low budget there is no other option.

Do these PCS system from curry's et al come as a system direct from PCS would? I mean in terms of, does it come with a win7 disk? Does it come with all the preloaded junk that currys systems do? How does the warranty work? Can you go direct to PCS? Or do you have to through the muppets at Currys?

It's good advertising for PCS, more so if they're available in any stores as well. I like being able to check out a product in store, especially devices like laptops to check things like the keyboard and touchpad (even if I then might buy it elsewhere). I also like being able to buy/pick up from a store if possible, so I don't have to worry about being in when it's delivered, and it's easier to return if the product is faulty.

I have bought from PC World over the years (a laptop, netbook, bits for my desktop PC that still serves as my media/file server, a printer, and probably lots of other smaller items) - I didn't really care about the staff, because I knew what I wanted and ignored them. Maybe I could save a few pennies by ordering online, but I don't mind paying a small amount for convenience.

"Does it come with all the preloaded junk that currys systems do?"

I would assume that with any computer, Currys/PC World have no say in what goes on the system, as that's down to the manufacturer (at worst, they can try to flog you a copy of Norton alongside it...) There was no pre-loaded junk on my Samsung netbook that I got from PC World.

I'd hope it comes with the same discs as if you'd got it from PCS. unless PCS have chosen to do something different.

"How does the warranty work? Can you go direct to PCS? Or do you have to through the muppets at Currys?"

How does it work when you buy a washing machine or anything else? Some of the comments here suggest no one's ever bought something that wasn't direct from the manufacturer, when that's usually the norm :)

I don't know how PCS do it, but it's common for warranties to be offered and hence honored by the manufacturer. But note that under UK law, the obligation when it comes to various laws about products not working (especially if it breaks within 6 months) is with the retailer, not the manufacturer. So it may happen that retailers try to push consumers onto the manufacturers, when actually it should be the retailers doing that job. PCS seem to have a good reputation for fixing things, though it a lot of cases, simply returning it to a store may be better than dealing with some distant manufacturer.

i visit pc world all the time. pop in to see what pc stuff they have, look at the awesome 4k tvs and to laugh at the prices of stuff that is not as good as what i bought 2-3 years ago for less.

ive also planned my house out from seeing stuff in their store lol (i dont have a house yet). fridgefreezer with an ice maker and water cooler, washing machines and other boring stuff plus a 4k tv :)
