Has anyone had experience using a portable laptop charger?

What brands would you recommend and what is the speed like when charging?

I've never tried nor actually heard of a portable laptop charger, I always figured all these portable chargers were for mobile devices like phones and maybe tablets, figured laptops use too much juice to be charged like that.

I saw one on Amazon so I wasn't sure if they were actually any good so wanted to see if anyone has used one before

I considered one some time ago for a Vortex III. There were 2 problems. The first was that a plug to fit the power input of the Vortex was not available. The second was that the Vortex power supply was 220 watts. However, during normal use consumption does not exceed 100 watts so anything reasonably above that would probably have done.

I settled for a 300 watt 12 volt to mains inverter from Maplin. I use it in a camper and can plug anything into that (laptop/ monitor/ TV/ sat receiver etc). The inverter will switch off before flattening and possibly damaging the battery.

there is 2 types of portable chargers, it doesnt matter if it's for a laptop or a phone:
-the mechanical one: you typically have to crank a lever round and round and round, but by definition you ARE charging
-on the other hand we have the "battery" charger, which IMO is not by any stretch of the word a charger, more like an aditional battery. this one works by differential, this means it will equalize both batteries to the same level of energy, so in truth this one is more like having 2 batteries that can comunicate between them and transfer energy between them

conclusion: unless you want to crank that lever, just get a new battery for your laptop, it will surely hold more charge than the "charger"

EDIT: after rereading: are we talking like laptop car charger? because i thought we were talking something completely different :D

Sorry for the confusion - I meant a portable battery charger. E.g. the mobile phone battery banks but a more powerful one (higher voltage / amp output)

There's one on Amazon which us 20000mA with up to 19v / 3A output. I am not sure if this would be sufficient as I would be using a ultranote 2

compare it to your laptop battery, but due to how they function i would probably go for another battery instead

I'll see how long the battery lasts, and yeah a proper battery would probably be the safer option.

Thanks for the advice guys.
