Possible spec for high-end gaming and video editing

I'm looking for advice on replacing my old gaming laptop with a gaming PC. I'd like to be able to play the latest games at high spec (not worried about 4k) and do high-end video editing. I don't really know much about power supplies, monitors or cases, so really looking for advice. Is all of this overkill?

The 7800x has been made obsolete by the 8700k on the Z370 configurators. The 8700k is better in pretty well every way and probably cheaper too.

You could look at the Ultima X01 which has a fixed £1479 price for about £1700's of hardware including an i7 8700k, 16gb 3000MHz DDR4, GTX 1080, H100i V2 cooler, TXm 650W PSU, etc. Less storage but you could buy your own storage to add in and it would still be hundreds of £ cheaper than the above, while offering more performance.

The monitor is a fair match for a GTX 1080.

It has a heavily discounted price so if you specced the same thing in the configurator it would come out as about £1700 instead of £1479. The set configuration is the trade in for the ~£200+ discount.

If the Ultima looks good and your only concern is the lack of wifi + BT, you could always either ask PCS to add a wifi+BT network card for an appropriate fee, or buy and add your own network card / USB adapter. :)

Do you think the motherboard in the Ultima has the potential for a long life of upgrades in case I want to, for example, get a new graphics card in a couple of years?

Yes. It should offer the same performance with a new GPU in however many years compared to even the most expensive alternatives.

It doesn't support SLI, but SLI is rarely the best option when there are single GPU alternatives. And in 2-3 years there will be at least a couple of gens of better single GPU options from both Nvidia and AMD to choose from. The only modern context in which SLI seems really relevant is GTX 1080 ti SLI for 4k gaming on a ~£2500-£3000 budget.

Besides which, DX12 is moving away from SLI such that SLI will likely be progressively less relevant future multi-GPU gaming anyway.

The mobo has an extra 3 sata III ports for more HDDs (additional to the HDD it comes with), and 2 M.2 slots, both capable of supporting PCIe NVMe SSDs, so you can add another one of those in addition to the 256gb one it ships with.

Yes, it would do well in VR and significantly exceeds the required hardware specs for things like the Vive and Rift
