Potential Purchase ... Any thoughts on this Spec please

Hi all,

I'm a returning cutomer who is looking to upgrade my PC and let my son have the previous one as an upgrade ... I might wean him off the Playstation one day

I use a PC for various activities, including gaming and computer graphics work. The most demanding games I usually play are flight sims and rpg style action games, like Skyrim. I also run computer graphics software, such as Modo, which will make full use of multiple cpu threads. I'm 66, so I'm thinking this might be my last upgrade and, consequently, I'm looking for a system with good reliability and reasonable longevity.

The proposed spec is built around the Intel i7 six core processor and a lot of hard drive space. The HD capacity may look like overkill, but running out of it is what usually drives me to an upgrade

I did intend to go for Windows 7 but, having checked out a few videos on YouTube, I think Windows 8 might work for me. This assumes that I can ditch all of the Microsft apps from the 'modern UI' and add things like live mail to the desktop. This will leave the 'modern UI' as a rather neat and formatable index to all of the desktop programs I use.

Thanks for any comments and suggetions regarding my proposed spec.

I'd go for the Haswell i7-4770 with a Sabertooth Z87 motherboard, good enough for your graphics software and better for gaming. Also go for a a 2TB and a 4TB Caviar Black to assist with airflow instead of three HDDs. Also try the onboard sound from the Z87 before you add a soundcard, it's really high quality.

Hi,

I would also suggest the new i7 4770 is going to be fine for your build and will save you some money.

In terms of Windows 8 I have it on my laptop but I did buy the third party Start button from Stardock. Without that bit of software (for £5) I would have thrown the laptop out of the window by now.
