Potential upgrade to Samsung G9

Hello :)

I got my PCspecialist desktop back in March 21, I'm not an hard-core gamer (I probably played only D3, D4 and Last Epoch ever since), but I've been thinking about getting a Samsung G9 monitor. I work remotely and I could benefit from the screen size. But probably not the Neo model one since it's quite costly. (I currently have an AOC cu34g2x).

From what I have been reading the RTX 3070 is not the best option for that monitor. So I would like to ask for an assistance in what would be the best option.

I was doing some research about the RX 7900 XTX, because it has a more appealing price.

- Does anyone recomend over RTX 4080, due to the price difference?
- Could the RX 7900XT do the job?
- Would I need to change something else in my build on top of the GPU, like power supply for example ?

Thanks so much!

The 7900XT is very powerful and uses a lot of wattage. I would be a tiny bit nervous with it using only an 850W PSU. That being said, it should be fine, just a shame the upgrades weren't considered at the time of building.

Value for money the 7900XT is fantastic, it will trade blows near enough to the 4080 for your uses. The only thing to consider is if VR is in your future, if not then I would go down the 7900XT route as well.

Thanks for the answer, folks 🙏

At the time I didn't know that I was going to work remote full time, thus, benefiting from an even wider monitor for both games and productivity. Well, also mainly because I didn't have the money to go all in at the time, on top of the crazy waiting period for the 3080 back then 😅
But it's still something not decided, the current setup works perfectly fine, it's more of a nice-to- have desire in getting a 49' monitor that is driving a potential upgrade.

Assuming 850W could do the job plus the quote above, probably I'd then go for 1200W, just in case?

Alternatively I suppose I could also look for wider monitors, other than the G9, that might not required a significant upgrade.

Problem was, back then no-one thought that GPU power draws were going to be so increased in the next gen.

I would say, however, that upgrades were considered...and I quote AgentCooper here:

"so I'd suggest dropping the GPU down to that and using the savings to up the PSU to cover future upgrades"

@AgentCooper Scott is criticising your speccing abilities

I'm joking, of course. Looking back it seems silly to only spec an 850w but, back then, it seemed like 850w was too much

There are always limiting factors unfortunately. I've always been ahead of the curve with stuff though, I was recommending 16GB of RAM when people were adamant (prince charmiiingggg) that 8GB was plenty :D

I guess I just like spending peoples money haha.

I don't think you need to upgrade the PSU, I think you're covered. It's just worth keeping an eye on. Nothing bad will happen, worst case would be bluescreen or glitching. Not sure how badly affected AMD cards are with spikes though, the Nvidia offerings are pretty bad.

The monitor selection is fine, it's more what sort of level of performance you're looking at from the GPU. If the budget is there for the 7900XT then it's a fine choice, the 6950XT is also worth a look though as it has your performance needs covered but will likely be a fair saving.

Thanks for sharing what could be the worst it could potentially happen using the same PSU. I hadn't thought about it.

I will monitor the prices between the 6950XT (if it can push through a G9 or similar) and the 7900XT.

If I'm being honest with myself in those 2 years I have the PC, apart from Diablo 3, I haven't played any other game for more than 50 hours I'd say. I spend 90% of my gaming time on Playstation.

So it's more of a monitor oriented decision than gaming.

Thanks again for the advice and help 🙏

The worst would be insufficient power availability during a big spike which would lead to a blue screen of death, or just outright shutdown of the PC.

The best would be weird bugs, like Apps failing to open, or crashing mid use.

From my totally uneducated viewpoint, i think AMD gpu's are less power hungry in the scope of transient spikes, but I'm not 100% certain about that.

Here's a good video on it
