Problem with Nvidia Optimus defaulting to integrated graphics

I have an old Optimus laptop bought from PCSpecialist around four or five years ago (perhaps Optimus IV or V) that has had a recurrent issue which has progressively gotten worse namely to do with the Nvidia Optimus software on the laptop.

My issue is that my laptop can't seem to recognise the GTX 660M graphics card when playing games, and so defaults to the integrated Intel 4000 graphics instead. Originally, I could work around this issue by doing a manual override in the Nvidia Control Panel by selecting a global preferred graphics card or by individually selecting a graphics card for a particular game. I could also right click on a desktop icon (such as for Minecraft) and select the option 'run with graphics processor' which would similarly do the trick.

For a while now, though, the option to set a global graphics card or individually set a graphics card per game in the Nvidia Control Panel (and likewise the option to right-click a desktop icon and choose which graphics card to run with) has been greyed-out (that is, I can't edit or access the option), and it seems irrespective of what the Nvidia control panel says should be assigned to a game everything seems to default to the integrated graphics (i.e. Minecraft, Rocket League, Skyrim, Fallout - games that I had been able to play with good FPS on high settings before on the Nvidia graphics card).

I have checked in the devices section of the control panel and it says that the GTX 660M is working properly, so it seems not to have burned out yet. I wondered if anyone here has a suggestion for how to solve this issue as I would like to have the ability to play my games again (as this was one of the key factors in getting a custom-built laptop).

It says my driver version is 9.18.13.2702, and unfortunately I don't know how to check for the version of Hotkey.

Not sure what version that's talking about. If you open nvidia control panel, it tells you on the home page.

Have you been updating your drivers?

Ah right, the version of my nvidia driver is 327.02.

I don't regularly update my drivers, I think I tried on one occasion and it caused problems with my computer so I rolled back. Currently it gives me the option to roll back to a previous version so that would suggest to me that I have updated at least once.

Your graphics drivers are hugely outdated. Windows will be updating automatically I assume which will mean other drivers need to be updated to keep up with the OS changes. What windows are you on?

I would suggest updating all your drivers by going to the clevo website for all but graphics which you do on nvidia.

The system at the moment isn't properly configured.

Thank you for both of your comments, you're right I feel as I don't manually update my drivers and haven't to my recollection set anything to automatically install updates then it might be time for me to download the latest driver for Nvidia. I use Windows 7 and my laptop is an i7-3610QM 2.30GHz with 8GB RAM.

SpyderTracks, when you say update non-Nvidia drivers from Clevo, I saw this main link (http://www.clevo.com/en/e-services/Download/default.asp) and it said to only update if you have a Clevo laptop, would they still be valid for my system?

Thank you for your help and questions though, if this problem with Nvidia really is just a question of old drivers then that would be useful to know, I will try installing the most up-to-date Nvidia driver now (having set a system restore point yesterday just in case).
