This may not be the cause but worth a quick check to rule it out - have you looked at the Power settings for the devices?
On my laptop Windows defaults were to allow the laptop to turn off devices to save power (which can cause them to stop working). Check this by:

In Device Manager (Windows Key + X then select Device Manager from menu)
Expand the Networks section and right click on your Network adapter then select Properties from the menu.
In the Properties box click on the Power Management tab.
Where it says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" ensure the box is not ticked - or clear it if it is and click OK.
Go back to Device Manager and do the same for your USB devices and Optical Drive
