Question re: SATA cables for my motherboard

Hi,

I received my new PC a couple of days ago. It has four 3 gbit/s and two 6 gbit/s SATA ports. I want to add an existing SATA drive. Can I use the old cable (which is rated at 1.5 gbit/s) or do I need to buy a new 3 gbit/s cable? I can live with the drop in speed, if I can use the existing cable. The motherboard is an Asus P8Z77-V LX. Thanks.

As far as I am aware sata is backwards compatible so yes you will be able to use your 1.5gb cable but with the significant drop in speed. Sata cables are cheap enough these days so I'd reccomend buying one that will match the speed of your drive and motherboard.

Thanks for the quick reply. The drive is a few years old so I doubt the better cable will make a huge speed difference. In any case it's only going to be used for extra storage.

Edit: Yes, I can confirm that it works :)
