RAMDisk (speed up internet or PC)

I always thought this was a myth but its true!

here is the link, you can either buy the full version, or use the free version, which limits you to 4GB, which is way more than enough for most
memory.dataram.com/products-and-services/software/ramdisk

This can be setup for different things, as soon as i get some more RAM, I'll be setting it up as an internet cache but im sure it can be used for other things, the one thing i want to know is if you can put part of windows on here for speedy bootups, I may try that see how it goes

Seems easy enough and would be ideal for those with slow internet, or with an SSD (and want to prolong the life of it)

This would be a good cheap solution for those with a lot of memory but getting a bit of lag

Hope this helps some people to speed up their system, if i get round to buying some more RAM ill post back on speed differences

PS Can I have a sticky? :p

RAM, is like ultra fast right? 100x faster than an SSD, so why not store files or programs on there? This allows you to put files onto your RAM for super fast loading times, I saw a video of RAMDisk on the whole of windows.. WOW

RAM is non-persistent. Switch off your pc and it forgets. That software uses a save and load during boot to make it look as if the drive is storing the data. So I would assume that sticking any boot files on their would make the boot time even longer

Surely setting up the internet cache would only speed up stuff once it was downloaded already (into said cache), if you've got a slow internet, it's still going to be slow downloading stuff.

Or am I missing something here?

It wont speed up first load of web pages as Rakk said, and as prisoner said its not persistant so it will have to load into ram each boot, I think even if you hibernate it stores all contents of ram on the disk and then reloads on boot. I really can't see this being beneficial since loading times off an SSD or even a HDD for cached data is so small I don't notice it anyway, it just seems like a waste of ram when actually the ram could be being used as was originally intended by the OS.

RAM disks are neat to play with but i do feel like we are heading into the past a bit here.

I remember i had sin loading from a ram disk back in the day, 1998.

yes, it wont benefit first time around although accessing regularly visited sites will be quicker

im not sure if it saves when its turned off im sure it said on the site somewhere that it can be stored when the PC is off

I can't really see it bringing any tangible benefits for internet browsing. Compared to downloading from the web, its extremely quick to open up a web page that you already have cached on the HDD. Who really needs to save a few milliseconds by having it in memory rather than on the HDD?

I remember ramdisks way back in the days of MSDOS. Fun toys but of little practical use I found (unless you had a truly gargantuan amount of memory such as 8MB!). If you did have enough memory then it could be fun to load something from a floppy disk onto a ramdisk and watch it run like lightning :) Tho of course it took a while to get it from the floppy disk onto the ramdisk in the first place.

you'll be surprised how much the cache may slow you down, obviously not so much on an SSD but this is a great solution for those with a laptop and a slow drive, or an old computer, with a caviar green always spinning down, it probably takes a while longer to load
