range on 300mbs WiFi card problem

Hi guys,

My desktop arrived yesterday, along with my new monitor and mouse!

However, when set up in the study upstairs the WiFi card can't detect my network, or any of the neighbour's except for one. In the same spot that my desktop is, my iMac, my laptop and my tablet device all manage to get a strong connection.

I brought the desktop downstairs to plug it in directly, but as soon as I turned it on within 2 foot of the router, the wireless card detected and connected.

From here I changed settings on the router; upped the wireless mode to 300mbs, changed the wireless frequency to 5Ghz, but desktop disconnected and I had to change it back to 2.4Ghz.

Everything was working for a few hours while I updated and installed a few games. I brought it back upstairs and it still couldn't find my network. It picks up a weak signal from next door, whereas my other devices have most of our neighbouring wireless networks showing- usually about 6.

The card obviously works, but ATM has an awful range compared to my other devices. Any advice on how to improve this, or understand why this is would be great.

If it helps, I am with virgin media, 50MB, super hub and using aWIRELESS 802.11N 300Mbps PCI-E CARD.

Apologies for the long read guys .

Cheers, MaRK.

I have. Moving them seems to change it's opinion though. I have them sticking outwards ATM it seems to find the network, but it is sluggish. Are there extension cables/leads that would allow me to move the antennas further from the tower?

You won't need any extensions, that's not the issue, it should be fine over say 20ft and through a couple of walls/ceiling. Have you installed the latest drivers?

I used Device Manager to check for updates, but it says that the drivers are up to date. It is working now, although it is slow- Ookla's speed test informs me that the desktop is getting 12ms ping, 1.08Mbps and upload 0.47Mbps. other devices next to desktop are receiving much higher speeds.

Device manager cannot update drivers. You need to go to the manufacturers website to download updates, that goes for all components.

Hi Guys,

just an update + solution to my wifi problem.

Thanks for the info, SpyderTracks; your advice led me to find newer drivers which were more stable, but the signal strength was still awful whereas my other devices were fine at the same location. The desktop was fine when it was placed downstairs, but it just seemed to struggle elsewhere. This has been improved with a wifi booster/extender, now i get full bars and everything seems fine - the extender was on sale at argos too, cheaper than amazon and the like, so i was happy with the £24.99 price that fixxed my connection.

Cheers for your help guys,

Mark.

Well, glad you got a workaround, does seem odd that the reception is so poor, but glad it's sorted anyway.
