Can any one recommend a good 5.1 surround headset for about £75? Or am I asking too much for this price tag???

are you using any kind of sound card?

for that price you would be best sticking with analogue 5.1 headsets paired with a nice asus soundcard it would be quite a good combo.

Hummm, maybe I should have mentioned that I'm playing on a laptop, so only onboard audio...

ah, well in that case, I'd probably go for a USB headset. I think Razer and corsair have some good usb headsets. You will have to check reviews to see what kinda 5.1 you get though.

Thanks for your suggestions guys. My internet has been down for a few days, but seems to be stable now.

So I researched a bit and came to some (personal) conclusions...
The "true" surround loses a bit of quality due to the smaller drivers and are also more prone to fail.
The "virtual" surround can be achieved with any stereo headset as long as you have a surround processing unit, usually an external sound card provided by the headset manufacturer in a combo like deal or something like the Asus Xonar U7.

One of the problems I encountered is the connection type to the laptop usually requires a digital or s/pifd connection that I don't have on my laptop (planing on upgrading to a Vortex IV by the end of the year, hopefully sooner).

So my plan is to get a fairly good stereo headset, thinking of the Turtle Beach Ear Force PX22, and get the Asus Xonar U7 with the new laptop, or get the Asus Orion Pro ROG that solves all my problems as is right on the budget.

What do you guys think?

You will compromise on the portability if you go for the external sound card. Is a USB connection headset an option for you?

Hey Keynes, portability is not a big issue for me as I use it mostly as a desktop replacement. Though I guess less hassle is always good... But yhea I'm happy with a USB connection headset. Do you have anything in mind?

I did check Razer headsets, but the cheapest I found is the Razer Megalodon, they look quite good, but still over £100 at Amazon. I think I'm gona go with the Asus Orion Pro and if they turn out really crappy I can always send them back.

Don't want to hijack this thread, but I'm also interested in this topic as I'm looking for a good 'real' 5.1 gaming headset. I have a fair sound card (Sound Blaster Recon3D) which has a digital out which I'd like to use, but I'm a total novice in this area and have no idea what options I have. I don't really have a budget as such - I'd evaluate any headset on its merits... Any suggestions welcome!

I think you can get a black version too, but not sure if they are marketed in the UK.
