Recording and Streaming games

I've asked this question on twitter but I haven't received any answers.

Do you need to use something like OBS with a game capture device to be able to stream?

I'm thinking about streaming games, and making videos on how I process my landscape photos in Lightroom 5 via Twitch and Youtube. I'm unsure on how to do it.

Am I right in saying that you use the capture device to record videos with your voice and upload them to Youtube. But you use a capture device with OBS to be able to stream via Twitch?

I watched this video and it gave me a rough idea on what to use

You don't need a capture device to live stream a PC, I could be wrong but I think generally capture devices are mainly used to bridge one machine with another for streaming so only one machine is dealing with the game and the other is dealing with the encoding, another use is to use one to capture from a console with your pc.
