The rig as shown in the spec below is now 1 year old and some players on here have told me i should have got a monitor with 1440p . I have been told that 1440p is a screen resolution but dont understand this because my screen resolution is 1920 x 1080 . How does 1440p mix with 1920 x 1080 or am i looking at this completely wrong.

I will eventually put my current monitor on a second rig from pcs , it wont be used for games just used as a guinea pig for testing things before i put them on my games rig , i always do this in case something goes wrong on my main set up.

The replacement monitor for my games rig will still be a 24 inch model as i find this size more than adequate for gaming and general use.

On monitor resolutions you have basic standards, 1080p (1920 x 1080) being yours and the old standard. Then there's 1440p (2650 x 1440) which is pretty much the current gaming standard also sometimes referred to as 2k, then there's 4k (3840 x 2160) which is high end gaming, though still currently 60hz. With the release of the 1080ti, 4k is going to be the new sought after standard.

On top of resolution you have refresh rate (Hz). This is the max times the monitor can refresh the picture in a second, essentially it's the same as frames per second. A 60Hz monitor paired with a beast of a graphics card that's outputting 300fps will still only ever be able to display 60fps of those as it's limited by the screens refresh rate.

So your graphics card is far too powerful for a 1080p screen, it's wasted on it as it will only be using a fraction of it's power to output the max the monitor can handle. A 1440p High refresh 144Hz (or higher) screen would be a much better fit.

Size wise, the higher resolution, the bigger you should have your monitor. A 1080p standard size was 24", but a 1440p monitor I would argue should be 27" as your displaying a hell of a lot more information and 24" is just too small. 4k in my estimation (having a 28" 4k) should be 32" as an optimum.
