This review is not so much for the laptop itself but for the entire buying process. I found silly to review the components or the laptop in itself as there are plenty of information available online. You don't need another review from a random guy on a forum.

I placed my order on the 29th Nov, 2019 using the Black Friday promotion (around 50£ If I recall) and an Intel promotion (around 70£ again if I recall) using the finance that allows to repay the full price in the first year with 0% interests. A good deal in my opinion.

The delivery happened on 10th Dec, 2019. The full build took 12 days total, most of which the order was in "pre-processing" which I can guess that means it was in the queue to be prepared. It was expected as it is a busy time of the year.

The packages comes delivered in a much bigger box, completely surrounded by highly protective air-filled plastic. The laptop itself is inside its own classic "box-case". I'm highlighting this part for whoever would be concerned about the safety of the package during transport.

The laptop arrived already configured but needed anyway to have the nVidia driver installed.

I installed on it "Red Dead Redemption 2" that came with it as a promotion, and tried also "Titanfall 2" at the same time.
I also ran the benchmark "Firestrike" to assess temperatures and performances.

The average results for the benchmark was 14.000, an example here.
While playing both the games above I had bad experience with some random total system freeze. In some cases the PC would go down with a black screen and a buzzing sound produced by the speakers (not the CPU speaker, the actual audio card speakers) and in another it would just frame freeze and I was locked out of any control: mouse, touchpad or keyboard were completely disabled. The only option was to turn it off and on again.

After some research and a couple of topics here and a support request, I performed a clean re-install of the video drivers. You can read more about it on this forum's topic, here. That seems to have fixed the issue.

After dealing with that much more pressing matter, I started playing with some of my multiplayer games and had the unfortunate surprise of hearing every one of my teammates complain about hearing "jet engines" coming from my audio. I double checked and the problem seemed to be that no matter which headset I was plugging in, the PC would not detect it and keep using the on-board mic. That wouldn't normally be a problem but with this specific laptop, the fans are so loud that it was making impossible to have a conversation with others as the on-board mic is completely suffocated by the fans.

Again I performed several tests, spending even a bit of money on buying new hardware to test if it wasn't a problem with my current one, despite not having any issues with the previous laptop. You can read more in another topic's thread I created, here.

In the end, it was clear that there was an issue with the audio card as when using Bluetooth headsets, the sound of my voice was loud and clear and a minimum amount of noise.

So, PC specialist asked me to request an RMA. It was dispatched from my house on 7th Jan, 2020, received by them the 10th of the same month.
Disappointingly, despite their reassurance that it would jump at the top of the queue as much as possible, because it was a problem that was clearly present since the very beginning and not just something caused by a damage inflicted by myself, it was only checked upon on the 20th Jan, 2020. Nearly Two weeks after the RMA was initiated. I bothered the support a couple of time so I can't say if that was just the time it would have took, or if they made it a little bit faster even. Anyway the technician's report was as follows:

After I received your system I confirmed the issue you have been experiencing. I resolved the issue by replacing the motherboard, audio board and interconnecting cable.
I gave your system a check over to make sure everything was working correctly, once I was satisfied that this was the case I loaded a series of stress tests onto the system and left them running overnight.
I checked your system again this morning and it had passed the tests without issue. It was then cross-checked by a second technician to confirm my results.

I am satisfied that your system is running normally again and it can be returned to you.

Now I finally receive back my laptop on 22nd Jan, 2020.
Upon receiving it, I started and tested it again and unfortunately I must say that the issue persist. The only thing that changed is that now I can see that the system detect an "external mic" and "external speakers" channel which means that for the applications that allows you to select a different channel than the default, you can circumvent the issue with the noise.

I've reached the conclusion that the problem with the noise not being filtered out by the mic must be due to a poor quality of the drivers or the hardware itself. Unfortunately the audio card is not one of those selection with more options, so this is something to keep in mind if ordering this model.

Now, what follows is a list of minor annoyance or mild ones that do not warrant a support request as they are more of a design flaws in the laptop itself and the case TongFang:

- The jack for the battery cable is positioned behind the laptop (on the side of the screen), coincidentally it forces the cable to lay in front of one of the exhaust that constantly blow out warm-to-hot air. While this is not a problem in the short run, over time this softening (due to the warm air) and re-hardening of the cable will bring it to become quite more prone to break and expose the internal wiring.
  • - I personally use a laptop stand like this but that shows just another design issue. The jack that fit inside the socket has no soft-locking mechanism and that cause it to detach and fall down easily as soon as you move it.
- The touch-pad has a useless feature which is a double tap in the upper left corner to enable and disable it. This leads to often touching it while typing or simply gaming and reactivating the touch-pad which of course mess with whatever you are doing.

- Two keyboard keys already detached. I reattached them as it was just a matter of clips not holding them properly but it's not something nice to see.

- The space-bar trigger is in the centre of the bar and way smaller for the whole button. Which means that if you press the space bar on a corner of it, the action is not registered as the trigger does not go down.

- The software to manage the keyboard lighting and the "game" mode is definitely a low quality piece of software. As far as I've checked there is no compatible software to manage the different running modes (office, gaming and max performance) so you are stuck with it.

Edit(s):

- Despite ordering a custom thermal paste, there is no trace whatsoever of PC specialist applying it. You have to trust that they did not forgot / neglected to apply it. I remember that last time I ordered a custom PC (back when I was still living in Italy), they left in the box in which it was delivered, an empty tube and a receipt for the paste as a proof of having included it. Of course if someone wanted to just scam you out of it they could include an empty tube they have around but still, better than seeing nothing at all.

- The battery charger get incredibly hot, minutes after being in use. Which is not something that weird but I've had other chargers not warming up this much. Again, it was the only model available when purchasing this laptop.

I could be adding some more notes in case I forgot them in this first writing but the gist of it is that as product, it's not a bad one. For the price I paid for it (£1,279.00) I'm more than satisfied. The downsides are more related to the care in building and quality testing it before dispatching and the low quality of some parts (audio, cable, touchpad design, etc).

Hope this helps others make their choices.

Just to say you should be able to disable this feature in the mouse driver, NOT the windows settings but the actual driver settings.

Just to add that no laptop has exchangeable soundcard, it’s part of the motherboard, not a dedicated card that can be swapped out. There is always the option to buy a USB soundcard or DAC if you need improved sound.

Thanks for the tip, do you have any guidance on where exactly I can find this option?
Checking my device manager only give me read-only info, of course, and the windows' mouse configuration don't have anything as you mention.

Yeah, I knew that but re-reading my post, it's not something obvious. Can you give me more info on what a DAC is? Can't find much by just googling DAC.

Edit: Nevermind that, I was having a typo in my google search. I see what they are, I'll check around, thanks :)

All I really need is a good way of cancelling out the constant fan's sound that drown out everything (you can check my topic on that issue, linked above to have audio samples).

If you want a good mobile dac, the audioquest dragonfly black is incredible value. Or the alternative is to buy a decent headset with its own soundcard. I just picked up a set of steelseries arctis 7’s which are wireless with 30 hour battery life, have to be used to be believed, incredible value:
SteelSeries Arctis 7, Wireless Gaming Headset, DTS Headphone: X v2.0 Surround for PC and PlayStation 4, Black https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07GFRPR2D/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_t.ynEb2DRPQSB

Thank you SpyderTracks, I've bookmarked both and will come back to it the next time I made myself a present :)
The SteelSeries Arctis 7 is really interesting but the problem for me happens only when I need to talk with my teammates which usually is a couple of hours every other night so I'll probably go for the dragonfly usb :)

A DAC is just a digital to analogue converter, so it’s just from taking the digital audio OUT of the PC and turning it to an analogue signal for a stereo.

it won’t do anything with a mic.

the point of the headset is that it has its own built in soundcard and mic, so it would bypass your on board soundcard for both audio and mic.

Thanks for clarifying. I hadn't time yet to read what they are all about. I'll head for an headset then eventually.

Also, edited the opening post with another "issue".

Just noticed now that before the repair I had the physical button to switch between 'office', 'game' and 'max fan' mode changing the led lights cycling through three modes. Now the light just stay always on and it just change between "max fan" and "not max fan". I'll check with PC specialist about this.

Regarding the mouse, if you load up the mouse settings from windows, then in the top right you should see "additional mouse options"
That should load the mouse driver and you should see
2020-02-02 05_04_42-Window.png

That should then load some further trackpad settings under "device settings"

2020-02-02 05_10_40-Window.png

If you don't see a further tab, then it's likely the driver isn't correctly configured. If that's the case, log into your main PCS account and have a look for trackpad driver.

I see nothing of the sort.

And honestly, this is just a continuation of pattern that doesn't really make PC Specialist good publicity. What's the point of sending a laptop out if you don't even install the driver properly?

At this point it's been the video and trackpad drivers and who knows what else don't have the right driver installed at this point. Really, really disappointing, especially because the drivers download page shows again a very shoddy job:

No, it won’t be chipset drivers I wouldn’t have thought.
I’d give PCS a call today and explain that you’ve got limited functionality on the trackpad and think that a basic driver is installed and have they got a link to the full driver, or can they advise how to get to enhanced settings.

Just left a remote session with PC Specialist.

Touch-pad is not the same model so there is no option to control that.
Also, the gaming centre suddenly not working properly is a software issue, despite the only problem being controlling an hardware part (led stripe).

Also, totally not a problem that the led in the "fan mode" physical button don't lights up and indicate which mode they are in. Also not related, must be a software issue. Here is a video of the issue:

Do I need to add a /sarcasm at the end of this update?
One hour of remote session to resolve none of the raised issues, despite at least 3 people involved from PC specialist while I was connected.

I have just had a read through your post and the feedback you've provided, thanks for this and I would like to assist personally with this particular laptop. it's not been the smoothest of experiences and I would absolutely be willing to have a phone call to discuss this further with you.

Could you email [email protected] and put FAO Rhys in the subject line? I'll pick this up and begin arrangements with you.

Thank you @Ghosthud, I've sent an email as instructed.
I'm available for a phone call as well but we'll need to schedule it for a friday in that case. Other days, due to my job, I could have to jump out of it without notice.

i have disabled my mouse by going to the "Type here to search bar" then "mouse settings" and then " touchpad settings" on the left hand side and unticking "leave on when a mouse is connected"

I am glad that the Proteus power plug is at the back but after four laptops it is the first one!

This is what I've ended up doing but, using a bluethooth mouse, I would have to remove the receiver from the laptop for it to recognize that there isn't any external mouse connected. Not really practical.

Also you keep seeing in the upper corner that notification about "touchpad enabled/disabled" every other minute.

Not a solution. A workaround.

Sorry for necroposting this but I'm giving a summary of the events after several months.

Rhys has been absolutely delightful and professional in attempting to help me in any way he could. We had a couple of remote desktop sessions as well but there wasn't much they could do to fix the issues I had.

After nearly 80 mails exchanged (yes, eighty) these are the results:
- There is no way to have a driver/software that deactivate the upper left corner of the touchpad. Due to how the case is designed, you'll have to accept to constantly have the notification comes up saying "touchpad enabled / disabled".
- Microphone not working was a problem with the motherboard (audio on board). They replaced it.
- Audio very low was due to bad drivers. I found the right ones after diving into a rabbit hole that lead me here.
- During these last weeks, the main disk started causing BSOD (UNEXPECTED_STORAGE_EXCEPTION). They replaced the disk as well, I believe, I'm still waiting on details as the RMA just says "resolved".
- It took 2 RMA to finally reach this point for a total of nearly 1 month without a computer.
- The latest RMA the computer came back with a key not working properly. Something ended below the bridge. Luckily some air blown solved it.
- The latest RMA they also formatted the computer windows disk (or installed a new one) but somehow I can't access my "documents" directory which means every single application (browsers, games, etc) cannot work properly because they cannot write settings on the disk.
I spent the weekend formatting again and reinstalling everything.

EDIT: Of course I forgot something. One of the things the PC went in RMA the second time was that after the first RMA, the physical button that would switch fan speed changed behaviour from 3 modes (auto/eco/max) to just auto/max.
Now, just checking, pressing that button simply does nothing at all. Fantastic. But hey, they fixed the led stripe not working anymore at least. That's important I guess.

I don't know what the QA phase in PC SPECIALIST means, but definitely it needs a big overhaul.

I'm surely forgetting something because all these has happened over several months due to COVID19 but in short, if you consider yourself lucky, please buy from PC SPECIALIST, the prices are definitely competitive. However if you don't fancy yourself a lucky one, stay away as the only support you can get that is worthy its name, is by the CS reps that, unfortunately, are not technicians anyway. They can only do so much.

Special mention for the "my download" section of everyone account as I've never seen such a mess of disorganised / outdated uploads.
From wrong files, to full on chinese files that you can't even imagine what to do with.

DrnPs8K.png

Seriously, have someone sort that thing out PC SPECIALIST because even companies that just sell to the masses (ASUS, ACER, TOSHIBA, etc) have better organised drivers download sections that actually have the right files in it at least.

I'm here, hoping that windows update have found the right drivers for my laptop because if I install one of those in the download sections, i can expect even water coming out of the speakers at this point.

I've had a similar issue with the driver page as well. When receiving my Vyper 3 recently (without Windows) I obviously needed to install all of the drivers. Unfortunately there was no driver for the Game Centre software.

I must say, I did call up and they told me it would be fixed by Monday (the call was on Friday). They then sent it to me the same afternoon.

Other than that small issue, I've had no issues at all. But it does make me think what other drivers I could be missing?
