Right, what do we all think of this...

My wife knocked a full pint of blackcurrant juice over my 5 year old Vortex II at the weekend and it is no more!

I'd been toying with the idea of replacing the old girl anyway (Vortex II, not wife) so this has kinda forced my hand.

I need this to be powerful, as I would like to play the newer AAA titles that the HD6990M in my Vortex II couldn't handle, and I often do a fair bit of video encoding.

Portability isn't *that* important as it's more a desktop replacement than a true laptop, but I do travel sometimes, and the twin power supplies of the Vortex VI rule it out for me, stunning though it is.

I've come up with this spec for an Octane III 17.3"

The only adjustment I would make is to reduce the memory to 16Gb, even that is over what is required by any game at the moment, and it will be ample for years to come unless there's some major change in the way games are made in the near future.

That is unless you have some other requirement for that amount of RAM.

Other thing to say is that the GTX1080 will run 4k with max settings on *most* games currently at around 40 - 45 fps. For longevity, you'll either have to reduce settings or reduce the gaming output to 1440p in the future.

I chose the 2x 16GB ram configuration because it's the most cost efficient way of getting Dual Channel.

2x 8GB is going to leave me replacing 8GB sticks with 16GB ones in the future which isn't cost efficient.

As for 4K, it's mainly for 4K videos. I realise 4K gaming with everything turned up over 9000 will tax even a GTX1080, but I figured 4K with setting turned down one notch to high/very high is still a better experience than 1080P gaming at Ultra.

Isn't a GTX1080 complete overkill for 1920x1080 gaming?

Yes, that's all pretty accurate. Even a 1070 is overpowered for 1080p really.
