Router Problem

When I bought my new PCS computer in 2010 I retained my existing router which is a Netgear DG834G v.4.

I originally installed it so I could also use a laptop in another room, but seldom do nowadays. Anyway lately I have had a problem: on startup when I try to connect to the internet it hangs with a white screen for a couple of minutes then displays "Your broadband modem is experiencing connectivity issues". I try the usual things like rebooting, unplugging for a minute or so then replugging, occasionally this restores the connection but mostly not. Of course, I have checked all cables and the connections seem OK.

I searched the net for help and found that if I power on the router, wait until it is fully restarted (2 minutes), then power on the computer, it usually works (but not always). But it has got to the stage where this happens nearly every time, I rarely now get connected without this procedure.

As it all worked fine for years without this procedure, my question is: where is the problem? Is the router faulty? I tried to upgrade it but it made no difference. Of course I can easily buy a new router but would like to be sure that therein lies the problem first!

Can anyone help?

Thank you in advance.

If you can take the router out of the equation that would be the easiest way to see if it's causing the issue, for example when I thought I had router probelms, I just connected my PC directly to my cable modem and that showed that it was the router since it worked fine without the router, obviously this will only work if your router and modem are not one and the same (I don't know how BT do it nowadays, or even if Virgin have a combined one now)

Is there any way you could borrow another router to see if your problem persists with your setup etc.

Here (Ireland) Routers, unless bought separately usually remain the property of the ISP so if it breaks they just send out a new one. Maybe ring your ISP and check.

Do you get get an services hanging. Application layer gateway maybe? Make sure that service is set to manual.

Yes, it's a combined router/modem and I don't have another one to try.

But it's obviously a connectivity problem, so I don't know where else to look. Maybe I'll just get a new one!

Thanks for that, yes maybe I can borrow one to try.

No I bought the router outright, and no I don't get anything else hanging - once I get connected everything is fine.

I still have the same problem, most times connection fails. I thought I'd try again downloading an update from the Netgear Support site, to see if that solved it. Did so, saved it to my computer. But my question, not having sufficient knowledge about the matter, is - does this automatically transfer the update to the router? Or do I need to do something else? Help please!
