Ryzen or Intel?

Hi all,

(Posted under new title which better summarises my question)

I've done some basic research on the Ryzen CPU and it seems like a good bet, but I'm still unsure whether I should stick to Intel or go with Ryzen.

I do some gaming -- World of Warcraft, Steam games, Skyrim, but nothing really demanding.

I don't need bleeding, or even cutting, edge, but I do want something that will last maybe 5 years before replacing. I've included a new 24" monitor as well.

Will this do? Overkill? Weird out-of-kilter spec?

What's your maximum budget?

Intel outperforms AMD generally especially with the 8th Gen i5's and i7's.

For your budget an i5 would probably suit better.

For gaming, Intel:

If buying Ryzen for gaming, then no R5 lower than a 1600.

And last I checked, WoW did still really like its single-threaded performance, so extra Intel points there.

The charts above give an indication of how far apart in gaming performance an R5 1500x and i5 8400 are, despite the prices being quite similar.

Faster RAM is a sound investment for gaming generally, especially for WoW (and also games using the engine FO4, Skyrim SSE etc uses).
The K350 isn't a very good case in terms of cooling and upgrade options. Pretty much all the cases PCS offer that have the bay for the internal card reader are a bit naff in my opinion.

Wow, thanks so much Oussebon -- those charts really spell it out!

And the game-specific recommendations are much appreciated.

Intel it is!
