Saved Myself From a Costly Mistake!

In a moment of madness, I cancelled my Ryzen gaming desktop build and ordered an intel 9900K build. It took me a day of online research to realise what a nightmare that would be (scary temperatures in particular gave me the shivers). So I cancelled again and went with my original choice. Let's hope I haven't irritated PCS with my constant toing and froing but given the considerable investment this involves, hopefully they will be understanding.

Your storage looks wrong. PCS will install the OS on the M.2 so you would usually choose a smaller M.2 than the 1st storage drive, as they cost more but are faster. Also you don't need a 1000W power supply. I would go 750W max (if you want modular).

You’ve also got a very basic WiFi card, the next one up would be more suitable.

If it's just for gaming you could save on the RAM, 16GB is more than enough for the foreseeable future. A 500GB Primary evo drive with a 1TB Firecuda drive would make more sense, as suggested.

The 1000RMx PSU is massive overkill. The 750w one would have you covered no bother. And of course the Wifi.

Additionally, do you need the USB PCIe card? The STRIX has tonnes of USB ports.

The components that are overspecced aren't going to magically make it more futureproof, they're just not going to be used, it's literally throwing money down the drain.

We can advise on a spec for £1500 that would actually perform better for your uses, just to give you some idea of how much you're wasting. You wouldn't have to upgrade that either apart from the GPU which will be the first bottleneck in any system.

the proposed respec. you had in mind. One thing I need to add which might explain my seemingly spendthrift and extravagant approach is that (I’m ashamed to admit) I’m the kind of amateur hobbyist who would be hard pressed to install a SSD drive or replacing a fan or psu units etc!

Also, with all the changes I’ve been making, I’m worried I might end up winding up and inconveniencing PCS - who, to fair, have been extremely patient and understanding up to now!

Same here - my present Desktop from PCS has been going fairly strong since 2012 (apart from a gpu upgrade).

It would be much easier if you would use the "Post to forum" button once you are viewing your spec and then copy and paste all the information. This allows us to use the hyperlink at the bottom to go in and tweak some changes with your specific proposal.

There is a LOT of wasted money all over that build... if it's for gaming of course.

Again, Intel is only valid at 1080p over 240Hz, basically competitive gaming, anything outside of that any processor pretty much will have a very similar effect within a few fps:

The "best gaming CPU" crown is purely referring to competitive gameplay where they reduce settings to lowest quality and reduce resolution to 720p. For any normal gamer looking for a fun experience, it's completely meaningless.

If you look at any third party review of the 10900k which is "the gaming king", you will find they all say the same thing, unless you're playing competitively, don't get it because it's overpriced, runs too hot and isn't going to get you any better performance.

If you're looking at sites like CPUBenchmark or Userbenchmark or any comparison site, they are Intel shills and fudge their numbers to make intel look better than they are and it's all completely bogus results that have no meaning in real world performance.

All his first benchmarks are 1080p, so yes intel's gonna be higher, but it's irrelevant because most people on 1080p will be on 144Hz screens, in which case the CPU isn't going to have any impact as the GPU will max out the screen anyway.

All his later bencharks are higher resolutions and he confirms what everyone else has said, that as you scale up, there's less impact on the CPU, and pretty much all CPU's will render the same FPS on the same GPU.

So he's confirmed what I was saying.

Just watch the last 5 minutes of that video, he's confirming everything you're being told.

Ignore 1080p, it's irrelevant as a resolution for any normal gamer.
