Hi guys,

So the electricity in the room that my PC is hooked up suddenly turned of while the PC was turning on from standby mode. I switched the electric back on from the main beaker and the monitor and other external devices power on and work fine, but the PC won't turn on.

There are no beeps or anything, pretty much lifeless.

So I'm assuming the PSU fried but I want to make sure its the PSU and not the motherboard or anything else.

Is there a way to tell. I disconnected PSU from the tower and connected the power lead to see if it work, it did not. I tried a different power lead and also didn't work so it's all pointing towards the PSU, is there anyway to make sure?

You can buy a multimeter from somewhere like maplins (not expensive), then check the output voltages from the PSU rails and make sure it's the voltages your expecting. You may well get a voltage coming out but it may not be as high as required if the things damaged.

Just received the replacement PSU for the PC and now it's back up and running like new.

I have the PC plugged into a surge protected extension so hopefully this won't happen again.

Good good. I use surge protectors on my PC, laptop, TV and music gear. I haven't had any surge issues when using them and these days they're not that much more anyway, well worth it for peace of mind.

Glad it's living again.n
