Sleeping Dogs outfit help

I started Sleeping Dogs last night which I purchase for £4.99 and I believe it is the limited edition game with the Police Protection Pack, GSP thing and Valve T-shirts.

I'm just a bit confused about the outfits, for one, I can change into a Police Swat uniform already even though I've only played for about 2 hours. Will this effect the way people behave towards me if I walk into a triad meeting dressed as swat or is it purely for cosmetic purposes (and the 50% damage reduction against you)?

Also, when I go onto drug raids for the police and stuff, on the first mission I swear I spoke to that police woman and said I'd help but she'd better send a good disguise over for me so I don't get discovered. Does this mean I'm meant to disguise myself in the Swat outfit whenever I want to do drug busts or is the swat outfit completely separate to the main storyline? I also have a ridiculously quick police car in my garage which makes me feel like I'm cheating a bit...

So yea, basically do outfits matter? I've been using the GSP stuff as apparently they make your melee and grapple better and I didn't want to risk running around doing triad missions in a swat outfit but I still don't feel like I'm playing the game properly as all of my 'gang' wear jeans and those white vest tops and occasionally in cutscenes it flicks me back into that outfit rather than what I'm actually wearing it.

Am I thinking into it too much and is it actually just purely cosmetic?

I never noticed any changes when changing costumes in the game (besides the cosmetic). But I might not have been paying enough attention really so I guess it could have? No idea...

Thanks guys :) I shall stop worrying then!

It does seem to break the immersion a little bit doesn't it! I don't feel like an undercover cop at all... wait, I didn't say that, I'm not a cop, promise.
