Software to check for new drivers

Not sure where to put this, so please move if required.

I would like to ask what software I can use to check if all my software/drivers are up to date on my computer? (if there is any good software out there)

I have seen plenty of ads for them but don't trust any of them. I go to the manufacturer's websites and individually check then work through device manager for everything else. Tedious I know.

This is the only way to correctly install drivers I'm afraid. All the driver installers are bogus and download incorrect drivers sometimes causing catastrophic failures, avoid at all costs.

If you really want someone else to check drivers for you, you can get Windows Update to do it. It's safer than most "Driver Updater" software you see.

Though plenty of people have had problems with that in Windows 10.

I am firmly in the "don't do it" camp, and this is based on decades of experience. Drivers are not like other software you have, in fact they should really be considered to be part of the hardware. Drivers exist only to interface the hardware device with Windows, this avoids Windows having to be built knowing the intricate details of every device on the market!

If your existing drivers are working and you have access to the full range of features of your hardware devices then the drivers do not need updating. Ever.

The only time a driver needs updating is if you have a problem with the device (that is fixed in the latest driver update) or if you need access to a new feature in the driver (as is the case with many graphics card drivers).

It's actually safer using older drivers. They have been executed billions of times in millions of computers and all the bugs have been ironed out. The latest driver update has probably only been executed a few thousand times in a few hundred computers and is thus much less reliable.

Ubuysa's rule #12 - Never update drivers (or the BIOS) unless you really have to.
