Sound Cards?

Ive just got the standard one at the moment.

But is it worth upgrading it to the Asus xonar sound card? Is there a big difference really?

Only if you have the audio gear to get the difference, though nowadays the difference has become much smaller. If you have £150+ headphones or speakers then you may notice a difference, but it depends on what the integrated soundcard on your mobo is.
You can always try it and see if it makes a difference, and sell it if it doesn't. There's always people who want to try the exact same thing.

My motherboard is just the ASUS® P8Z77-V LX: USB 3.0, SATA 6GBs, ATI®CrossFireX.

Id rather not have to spend any more on an upgraded sound card then if there is not much difference. Im only going to be using stand alone speakers which cost about £30.

All the recent ASUS mobos (motherboards) actually have - relative to other companies' mobos - excellent integrated sound. Either way you're very unlikely to notice the difference with those speakers.

I'm with Yamikotai on this, the realtek sound chipset on my Asus P8P67 Pro is great (had £150 Ultimate Ears ear phones plugged into it and no hiss or interference audible or any problems driving the headphones). I stopped using dedicated sound cards at around the time of the Create Audigy 2. It's in a box gathering dust somewhere. Unless you are doing anything professional audio work you won't need a sound card.

I disagree, if you are a FPS gamer and want the best sound from ya games, then a soundcard is required.

For example, If you want Dolby Digital 5.1 in games, which i must say is massively worth it! The best upgrade I ever bought was my ASUS DX along with my tritton ax pro's.

It costs a bit I admit, but it sooooooo better than onboard sound. I did actually try my trittons with both onboard and soundcard, and I'm afraid there is a pretty big difference.

Op if ya want more info, let me know :)

I wouldn't say I was an audiophile, but I can notice a big improvement with my sound card compared to onboard.

Im not really going to be playing fps games on my PC because i prefer to play them on my PS3. The only fps games i'd play are l4d2 and other smaller games (indie games maybe). Also i dont have an expensive headset, i have one which only covers one ear because i dont like having both covered while im playing, i just want the headset for communication with friends.

I can imagine a sound card would sound better with the right equipment
