Spec for Laptop for Gfx / Video / 3D Work

Hi All

I am looking to build a light(ish), portable laptop for doing graphic, video and 3d work on the go. I'll mainly be doing realtime graphic processing using software like max/msp/jitter and vvvv, hence the 2070. I'll also be doing some work in Houdini, for which I need as much ram as possible to cache the renders and sims. I know that I could probably benefit from more CPU cores for Houdini in particular, but as I stated earlier, I want this to be as light and portable as possible, and I do have access to a beefier desktop for rendering heavy sims etc... I also do a fair bit of desktop graphics, video editing and After Effects work.

I tend to dump big files on my desktop and I'm always forgetting my external HD so that's why I've gone with a couple of SSD's - wasn't sure about 2x1TB or just getting a single big drive.

I've also thrown in a 4K external monitor as much of my work consists of patching programs together so I could do with the real estate.

Any comments on the following setup are gratefully received.

Cheers

If you want a lighter chassis, look at the Recoil models. They're upto ~1kg lighter I believe.

More expensive, so you might not get a 2070 for the same price, probably a 2060, but a 2060's no slouch and if you're more interested in portability than maxing out on-the-go GPU horsepower it is worth considering.

Otherwise, spec seems solid. One minor comment:

1st Storage Drive
1TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA 2.5" SSD, (upto 560MB/sR | 540MB/sW)
The WD Blue SSD is apparently a bit faster and also a bit cheaper, so go with that instead.

Oh, and I suppose I'd consider the warranty upgrade and dead pixel guarantee. I'd probably buy them, but it's ultimately a personal taste thing.

Thanks for the helpful advice. On reflection, I think I am going to wait for some reviews to roll in for the defiance 16.1 and the new vortex. If the build quality holds up and there's no major issues with thermals, I'll probably go for one of them. Will take your advice about the WD ssd's though....
