SSD free space

Hi guys

I'm loving my new video editing machine.

I have an 80GB SSD for the OS and Adobe CS5 (plus Office and a few other apps).

Windows 7 Pro is supposed to take up 20GB and 'Programs and Features' tells me I have 62 programs installed, taking up 4.6GB.

But Properties of C: tells me I am using 56GB of space (leaving only 18GB free!). What's taking up all that space? Can I get some of it back and should I be worried?

Win 7 SP1 has just been released and I was considering other media editing programs, but fear I might not have room on my SSD.

I haven't gone SSD yet but i imagine that when you format one they still suffer from not giving you the full size, so an 80gb drive might give you 79gb usable. not to mention the swap space, temporary files etc.... a program i like is CCleaner which can as the name suggest clean up a lot of the unused stuff.

do you have a second drive ? you could move the swap space onto this drive, as well as some other less used programs.

edit : i thought 20gb was the minimum size.... i'll google.... nope you're correct apparently some can get it to under 10gb.

Thanks for that.

I've set the machine up for CS5/Premiere Pro, so:
  • the 80GB SSD is Win 7 and applications only;
  • I have a 1.5TB WD Caviar Green for project files, caches, render files, audio and imported camera raw video;
  • then I have a 1TB for output files and all other docs (Word, photos, spreadsheets and music).

Sorry, not familiar with swap files.

How much ram do you have. The reason I ask is because Win7 will create virtual memroy depending on your ram for example my Virtual memory is taking 8gb as thats how much ram I have and windows feels I should have that amount. Also while PCS turn of hibernate mode off in my computer as an option win7 is was still holding 6gb of space for when I went to re activate it so I was loesing 14 gb before I instaled anything

Also you may have restore points in that drive (I aint sure so they could be taking up a few GB as well)
to see whats taking up the room i recommed

its a small file that scans your hard drive and shows you whats in it and what is taking up space.

That's excellent. I followed the advice on the other thread and now have my used space on the 80GB SSD down to 41.5GB - more or less what the totals of all the folders on C: add up to and almost 33GB free instead of just 18GB.

I wish I understood a bit more about what I just did, but it seems to have worked a treat. Thanks very much, and thanks very much Pete from Pembrokeshire. I have a feeling you were taking me along the same route with your swap space.

It's something to do with that part of the disk that Windows treats as RAM, isn't it?

I have 12GB of RAM installed, so reducing that allocation on the SSD to 2048MB will have made a big difference.

That's a nice little tool, IrishTech. Thanks. Everything makes sense on C: now. It was mostly the space Windows allocated to virtual memory, I think, as you suggest.

I do have one restore point, created when I installed SP1 this afternoon. I think I'll leave that alone for now.

Worse case scenario is a duff transformer. More common cause could be some localised interference - possibly a mobile or wireless phone, wi-fi device - even a microwave, central heating thermostat or even a plug-in air-freshener.

Unfortunately, trying to find the cause will be ab excercise in trial and error but there are a coupe of important things to check first. Check the mains plug - a loose earth wire can cause some odd noise problems. Check the speaker cables at both ends and also make sure they haven't been damaged by furniture, nails etc - if possible, check for continuity (a torch bulb and a battery will do if you don't have a multimeter). If possible, try plugging the receiver into a completely different mains socket - mains-borne interference sometimes appears from nowhere.

To give you an odd example - I had problems with an amp in a previous house - the source turned out to be a combination of a fish-tank pump and a faulty TeleWest box - both of which belonged to my next-door neighbour and were on the otherside of the brick wall between the houses.

He he. I was joking, you know. But you were right! I have two sets of speakers, the Logitech 2.1 system I bought with the PC and a pair of Acoustic Energy floorstanders powered by the TEAC. Everything is switchable through a Maplin AV source selector.

The left speaker cable from the TEAC to the AE was hanging down behind the Logitech sub, right next to the cooling fins. Soon as I moved it away from the transformer in the sub it reduced and when I powered down the Logitechs it stopped.

Do you know anything about Saab air conditioning?

Now you're joking, surely!? No, Pete, no error code (yet) although the 08 was a stinker on the 9-5s. It just stopped cooling as the weather got hot last summer and Kwik-Fit found a leak. Cost me £200 but it was fixed.

I'm not going to bother you anymore. Well, not until I have another real problem for you to solve.

People like you make this forum great!
