Startup time

Hi, can anybody clear this up for me?
I recently recieved my new HTPC from PC Specialists, :)
Its a 3.4ghz i7 with 8gb Ram and 7200rpm WD Caviar blacks
Now, it seems to take about 1 minute to boot to the windows log in screen
I also have a laptop that is a 2.4ghz i5 with 4gb ram, this only takes 30 seconds
How and why? Any ideas guys?

Have a look in event viewer it may give you a clue to the problem.
Go to control panel(All control panel items)/performance information and tools/click advanced tools on the left hand side/view performance details in event log.
this will take you to diagnostics-performance events & boot and shutdown events.

Im not sure if this could be a reason, but could the amount of programs that are scheduled to start up on start-up affect the time the PC takes to boot?

Please correct me if im wrong, just a thought :)

Yes,your correct Corfate, this could be sorted in system configuration,
type msconfig in search box, click on startup tab then untick
any items you dont need on startup.

I did look at these things actually, and experimented a little, didnt really make much difference.
It seems odd to me that a high power desktop PC can take longer to startup than my laptop??

Perhaps disabling the logo screen. usually its the 'advanced' motherboards that makes it long is how i see it. it seeks and checks for components like hdds and stuff and will note errors if any. Just a portion of my viewings so i could be wrong.

Is taking a long time at the windows boot screen or is it before that? Could be BIOS settings, some processes here can hang around waiting for a key press.

oh well, its not a big deal, just doesn't seem logical that my laptop which has nowhere near the power of the HTPC starts up quicker.

No, you really ought to get it sorted, a caviar black should boot much faster than that. I'd suggest possibly giving PCS a call if you are concerned. How long does it take to get from when you first see 'starting windows' until you get to the log on screen?

maybe this will be more helpful?

You are right, that is abnormally long I think. There is quite a lot of time spent in the bios, it took about 45 seconds for windows to get to the log on which is long but it isn't the worst i have seen. Is your computer overclocked, because it seemed to do the double boot thing that you get with overclocked computers. Also, what is your mobo, does it support SATA 6GB/s? You may want to ring PCS on Monday to ask them about it, chances are they will come up with an answer immediately. I am afraid that I can't really help you that much, apart from tell you that that is Windows being slow rather than the programs it has to load etc. Well done on videoing, sorry I couldn't help. You could try sending a pm to vanthus asking him or possibly gorman but I can't guarrantee you anything. Ringing PCS will be the easiest way to sort it out quickly.

I suppose it would be worth a call to PCS just to see what they say. So you do think it is slower than it should be? Seems ok with everything else.

I'd say it is worth the call, I do think it is slower than it should be but I don't have a caviar black or a desktop at the moment so can't really tell precisely. I would see if anyone who has a caviar black could comment, if not, just give them a call. It won't do any harm!

I have a caviar black & it does boot quite a bit faster than yours,
maybe something like 20 seconds faster,
but I have quick boot enabled in BIOS.
This cuts out some tests on startup, you may not have this option,
I dont know.
I dont think you have anything to worry about really.
