Storytime!? Octane 3 CPU hotter than GPU??

Hey everyone,

So I've had my octane for 4 months already, really liking it.
-GTX1080, 6700k, 24GB RAM-
I've been in a constant battle to get temperatures in a good place. I've posted a couple other threads asking for insight about my temperatures etc.
To skip making you go through those posts; I was getting around 85C on GPU and 90C on CPU in the Witcher 3. Learnt about undervolting.
Got my CPU to -164mv running at 4Ghz stable + set the fans to the overclock profile from the CCC. This got me some improved temps like 70C on GPU and 65C on CPU.
Now...the weird thing, one day I decided to install the provided Nvidia GPU driver from the Clevo website. Without using DDU or any other 3rd party software to uninstall the current one, I just installed it over it lol, but, BAM! Temperatures went really low?? With the same performance?? Ok..ok...
I was getting 55C max on GPU and 60C max on CPU in the Witcher 3, fans barely moving. I was also getting like max 55C on CPU in Overwatch and GPU would sit at 49C lol.
So, I must say I was thrilled. Bought Battlefield 1 which was cranking up my CPU to like 75C. This made sense to me cause, playing on massive maps, with like 64 players on them..that's a lot of stuff to take on for the CPU. But...me being me, I wanted to see if I could scrape some more degrees of my CPU temperature lol... I don't really remember what I've done actually, reinstalled graphics driver using DDU over and over etc, I was so angry that I messed it up, but basically "managed" to get my temperatures back to where I was, at 80-85C ughhh..

Tried to fix it and ended up giving up and I reinstalled the OS. I bought a Windows copy from PCS, but forgot the laptop had no drive lmao, so I had to make a bootable image on a usb...more hassle haha. Anyways, I reinstalled the OS. Temperatures were still messed up :/.
So i figured, okay let's reinstall the GPU driver from the clevo website, cause in my mind that was the thing that fixed my temps last time, right?? Well it didn't this time. So I was getting like 75C on GPU and 80C on CPU in Battlefield 1 and the fans were at max.
Then again randomly, after one night, booted up the laptop, temps were low again. Like, what even??
Noticed that I had to run all games in fullscreen to get good temperatures.
Right now, running Battlefield 1 in fulscreen on Ultra Graphics Quality. GPU sits at 53-55C and CPU 65-72C.
If I change from fullscreen to borderless window, boom, GPU goes to 70-75C and CPU 80-85C. So yea.. I gotta run games in fullscreen.

So my main concern is regarding the difference of temperature between the CPU and GPU, I'd expect the GPU to be hotter but it's vice versa.
CPU is acting quite weird actually, it cranks up for a short time if I go into Chrome while ingame, then goes to normal, etc. I get strong spikes where it goes to high temperatures then goes back to normal. Any one has any idea about why the CPU is hotter than the GPU or about the spikes? :)
Not sure if this post will help other owners of Octanes, but I felt like I should share my experience as weird as it is.

I have an Octane 3 and I under older it to about -170mhz but have it running stable at 4.2ghz. Temps for the CPU tend to stay around the low to mid 70,s. I don't get massive spikes though. So you know, 75 degrees isn't a problem for the CPU, that's normal. It's if your running high 80's you want to start keeping an eye on things, high 90's becomes dangerous for the chip, over 100 and it's probably fried. The GPU always runs cooler on mine, I'm pretty sure that's normal.

Is there any reason you wanted to get the temps as low as you did? There is a thought that you can restrict your computers perfomance if you run too cold, as chips can have an optimum temp range where they run most efficiently.

If the chip gets to a point where it's going over 100, it will either throttle to maintain that temp or just shut down to prevent damage. It's pretty hard to fry the chip. Running the CPU at 90 degrees all the time would presumably reduce the lifespan as that's what heat does, but it's not going to be in imminent danger as I understand it.

The CPU can be hotter than the GPU since it's a very powerful desktop CPU in a laptop chassis. The GPU, if it's a 1080, may well not be at 100% load running at 1080p, so it's not being pushed to its limit. I believe they also share some of the same cooling pipes.

As for why the GPU should magically be a lot lower in temps while giving the same performance, I can only speculate that GeForce experience changed some of your settings without you realising. Perhaps it changed the AA level or DSR without you noticing, or other settings that would make a big difference to the load the card is under without particularly obvious changes to visual fidelity.

If I change from fullscreen to borderless window, boom, GPU goes to 70-75C and CPU 80-85C. So yea.. I gotta run games in fullscreen.
Borderless windowed is more demanding on the GPU. Sometimes not by much, but I've also heard of it having a real performance impact (RPS say they found it shaved between 10 and 20 FPS off https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2017/01/24/resident-evil-7-pc-performance/ ).

Try disabling all extensions for your Chrome, including any applied by your AV software. Potentially disable your AV software as well if you are comfortable doing so to see if that makes a difference. If you google something like Chrome CPU Spike you'll get a number of results including things like http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-3078450/google-chrome-cpu-spikes-loading-web-pages.html

@JDA1982 I managed to get a -180 undervolt before as well and keep it stable, but since I started playing battlefield 1, the cpu couldn't hold that undervolt so I had to go back to -160ish.
Regarding why I wanted to get the temps low, I don't know, maybe cause I wanted to limit the fans from going really high speed, or just that I was intrigued how the temperatures in the witcher changed radically haha.

@Oussebon, The GeForce Experience changing settings makes sense actually. If I look into Experience optimizing my games though, it will instantly put everything on ultra including resolution scales to like 150-200% which would crank up my GPU loads. I tried it and don't really see any difference, as you said, probably because I'm using a 1080p screen.
