Strange grinding noise upon start up for first 10+ minutes

ey there, I just recently bought an r9 290 pcs+ 4gb and due to its length, had to take out the metal HDD casing in my CoolerMaster Haf 912+ (which my HDD drive was positioned in) and transferred it to the lower cage.

I just took out the middle hdd case thing on the right and put the hdd in the one below

I initially thought there was a problem with the card because it wasnt being detected and my computer started really slow and then froze on the desktop. I think there was a buzzing sound too, maybe the psu? surely my psu has enough watts, CORSAIR 850W ENTHUSIAST SERIES™ TX850 V2-80 PLUS® BRONZE

I started it again (slow startup, also the grinding noise was ridiculous and constant for 3-5 minutes). I managed to isntall up to date drivers which fixed the graphics card issued but again the grinding noise persists everytime I boot up, also the startup time is extended. It sounds similiar to this, but a bit more screechy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J09pWNQPK7U#t=12 .

However the noise calms down after 10-15 minutes and shifts from a constant grinding (mostly) to a quick jitter/grind every few seconds for a moment. I am use to this to some degree but this seems much more frequent and louder.

I ran HD tune and did an error scan and everything is ok.

My HDD is the TB WD CAVIAR BLACK WD1002FAEX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (7200rpm).

Is this is a sign of a failing hdd? perhaps I didnt isntall it correctly... or maybe the PSU is causing problems? I played video games for a few hours on the computer last night and there were no problems really. The startup worries me though.

Does the grinding noise only occur when you are loading files or moving files around on the HDD?

I think if it were the PSU the problem would be a bit more dramatic, in that it would be constant like coil whine ( look it up and see if it sounds similar) or an outright failure. Coil whine would not cause slow startup or opening files. So I think it might be your HDD and once it warms up a bit its fine. That will not end well though as if it is touching where it shouldn't be, it will die sooner rather than later.

However do bear in mind that a caviar black is a noisy beast at the best of times, it's possible it is vibrating and making the noise worse if you have not installed I properly. Can you open up the side panel and listen for a more specific area its coming from? If its making the PC slow it's likely not 'normal' though.

best get a handle on where its coming from by sticking your head in the case when it's on.

It goes mental when I start up the PC, that is when it is at its worse. After 15 minutes it calms down and the grinding noise occurs every few seconds even if I am not doing anything and I have closed all programs running.

I am moving around and coppying some files now to back them up and yeah it does grind a bit but It sounds like the normal sound it always made when copying large files.

Yeah I am going to make sure all the screws are tight and what not, then listen in when I reboot. Will report back in a bit.

It could just be the caviar black downloading and installing update, windows indexing the drive or something like that.

Those could both result in 'slower' operation. Shouldn't last forever though.

I took out the hardrive , and put it in a different slot. It seems to be working now. I also used a drill to bolt down the screw.... No funny noises though :)

Thanks for the help
