Thanks for the replies. Sorry I didn't give more info.

The laptop is for my son, he's not too bothered about the 3d side of it. Is the processor more than suitable?

Yes, it is but it has too much RAM, 16GB is enough unless he is doing virtualization, Adobe suite,...

Hi Lucas. I play A LOT of FM. The game can run on quite a modest system really, even with the 3D engine on. The processor is important however you’d be surprised at how slow a game using a large database is, even on fast processors. You really have to ramp up the database size before you notice any difference and at that point it’s not the fastest anyway.

Until a few days ago I was playing on a 2017 MacBook Pro which had integrated graphics, an old i5 cpu and 8gb of ram. It wasn’t perfect graphically on the 3D engine but processing speeds were fine running a database of c. 30,000 players (3 nations and c. 10 leagues).

I’m not a pc builder so can’t really comment too much on your spec, I just wanted to reassure you that you don’t need a huge budget to get a capable spec for FM.

Cheers for that Nick. Like I said before, he's not fussed about the 3D side of the game. That's why I want to get him one with a good processor, I have seen an hp one with the new ryzen 4600 processor but I didn't really want to buy off the shelf so to speak.

Well you have come to the right place for all things PCS. If you let the fora know your budget they can help you, I’m sure. Obviously they’ll only advise on PCS products though. If for Fm only, hard drive speed really isn’t that important either. In fact it makes very little difference once in game.

Cheers again. My budget would be between £650-£750ish, could maybe nudge it a little higher. Not a massive budget but I'm sure I'll be able to find something.

FM wants frequency on the CPU. I would lower the RAM to 16GB as that's more than enough, and see if that allows a little wiggle room for the CPU to get a bump up.

Do you have the URL from the bottom of your list? If you click the "post to forum" button you will see the URL at the very bottom of the list. This allows us to go in and make amendments with your build as you had it rather than starting from scratch.

Takes you a little over budget but gives you the CPU clout that the game likes.

You're compromising a lot with that build.

Slower CPU
Slow RAM
Small SSD

All in favour of a GPU.

While the GPU would be a welcome addition for the 3D aspect, the rest of the build is taking a hit to make way for it. I would suggest the GPU would be an addition to the spec I proposed, if the costs weren't too much to swallow then it's a fine add.... I wouldn't drop anything else to make way for it though.

Thanks for that, you've swayed me towards the original one then, swapping the i5 for the i7. Thanks for the help, much appreciated.
