The 15.6" Defiance III Blacklight screen bleed issue has it been resolved?

Hi all,

When I googled reviews for the Defiance series of Laptops what keeps popping up is people are seeing an issues with backlight bleed through on the screen.
I've read the bezel might be too tight and pinching it and other bits and pieces. This is very off-putting if I'm to drop a grand and a half into buying one.

As I'd be using it a lot to process lots of high detail photos an issue like this could not be overlooked or ignored. I've configured a spec that I am happy with and waaay above
my budget Does anyone know if the current ones for sale have the issue fixed. Does the issue appear on all screens or just some..

Same issue here. The high probability to get a screen with bleeding is a big let down...

At the moment I am trying to figure out if the octane 3 is affected by the same problems.

Not feeling confident to pay almost 2000€ for a laptop with a very bad screen. Simply out of question for this price point.

When I contacted PCS the end line this is what they said:
"Generally for Picture quality and colour reproduction and accuracy IPS is currently the best to offer but it does come with the potential for small amounts of casting in a small percentage of screens."

I'd rather not be in that small percentage! if its avoidable. For me if I was taking photos in a studio with a black background and studio lighting and looking at black and white photos something like backlight bleed or casting
would be a problem. I would happily ignore it if I wanted the laptop for gaming but I've a desktop rig for that so this is specifically for portability/photos editing and possibly some 3d work with blender and messing about with 3d printers etc. I've not seen backlight bleed in the IPS screen tablets I've used or on other screens and I've never noticed it on any of the latops/screens in the place I work.
(on the flip side the prices on the website are so nice compared to the likes of mainstream off the shelf stuff)

I've been seeing lots of bleeding. Doesn't seem to be a small percentage.

I'll pass for now. Wait for other screens and take a look at other brands.

Ive posted my observations about the backlight bleed in this thread. Have a look.

https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/foru...houghts-on-light-bleed-and-possible-sollution

Yep I had read your observations, I had dropped an email to PCS to wondering if the issue had been resolved on newer builds and that they might/would know from customer feedback
its possibly the Bezel that could contribute towards the issue.......and ideally one would assume try and correct this as part of the laptop build before a laptop would get shipped out.

I'd rather not order one and get it with the issue and being stuck trying to fix it myself or sending it back. Am planning on purchasing somewhere between now and Christmas time so have a bit of time to read up on the different models.

What did you do in the end? Leave the Bezel off? modify it? send the laptop back ?
Wondering how bad it would effect observing and editing photo's with dark backgrounds.

If PCS come back to you with a response can you share it here? Thanks.

I've copied and pasted the response I got to my query below. If there's a way I can add a note or special instructions
when placing an order to ask for them to check the screen before its shipped I might use that when the time comes to part with my cash.
(or when I melt my credit card in my case since I cant actually afford it yet!)

"Thanks for getting in touch,

I would advise that backlight casting and glow is generally linked with IPS panels to some degree. The technology itself can exhibit this in a range of scenarios and whilst it can be as a result of pinching (around mounting points) even naked screens can display casting and backlight arcs. As a technology on some level it is generally understood and accepted. As such there are tolerances in place to determine the amount of backlight bleed, similar to the way that there are ISO standards to govern dead pixels. We generally do employ methods to minimise any potential casting on our laptops and do review any feedback to be acted on regarding laptops in the field that display casting and bleeding.

They are describing IPS glow. Linus explains it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vecsubZrpfs

I'm pretty sure they're describing backlight bleed there tbh. Not sure how pinching which they refer to would affect IPS glow. Also they seem to explain that "As such there are tolerances in place to determine the amount of backlight bleed, similar to the way..."

I assume when they're talking about the 'technology' exhibiting this, the technology they're referring to is LCDs in general, including IPS, potentially exhibiting backlight bleed (since you can quite happily get bleed on TN panels too).

It's possible that it's more associated with IPS in some situations if the panels have lower standards for quality testing by the manufacturer, perhaps because otherwise the yield wouldn't be enough.

Quite right that anyone concerned about brighter areas on their monitors / laptop screens should get a sense of which issue it might be and the Linus video has a few nicer pointers on that :)

So Finally took the plunge and went for the 17" Defiance III I really cant afford it so its going straight on the credit card and I'll pay it off bit by bit.
I was going to go for the octane as it could have a desktop processor in a laptop case but thought it might run very hot and be overkill for my needs.

I am hoping and praying for no dead pixels and no backlight bleed! I paid for a 30 day dead pixel warranty but this does not cover shipping costs as I'm outside of the UK if I need to send it back. I saw no way of adding special instructions to the order to ask for check for dead pixels and backlight bleed BEFORE they ship it. As this could be a deal breaker for me and I really dont want the hassle of returning it if it can be avoided.

I got hung up on if I needed an SSD drive and 32gb of Ram. I dont like SSD drives I prefer traditional drives (back experiences on my PC gaming rig) but if I was spending that much on a laptop I said what the heck will give it a try. Also a lot of people agree that 16gb of ram is enough for gaming but since I want to use this for processing Large amounts of images at the same time (photo stacking/macro work) from reading it looks like the more ram the better for the likes of Photoshop etc.

Looks like the following is out of stock though! Thought it would warn me before I placed the order!
