Now that my computer is ready for delivery I'd like to know what do you do/install when you get a fresh computer on your hands?

I personally trim the OS by turning off all the crap and then continue to install all communication software

Once you got your OS trimmed I'd set about ensuring you have all of the latest drivers installed by checking the manufacturer's website(s). A lot of immediate issues will/can be solved by a driver update :) Might take a wee while but its definitely worth it.

If you have a SSD you could follow Buzz's advice in SSD Managment thread here http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?14728-SSD-Management&highlight=buzz (Its a nice concise guide for SSD's)

Might be worthwhile configuring your power settings as you've got a laptop I believe? Making sure the laptop will do what you want when you want it to, plugged in or not :)

When I got my PC I missed out most of these steps lol and got straight to gaming, had to go back and update the drivers pretty quick when daft things started happening!

Windows and drivers will be installed.
PCS computers dont have any excess software, like most other computers.
The first things I do are,
1.Check in device manager all drivers are installed, check for updates if you want but I usually leave that to see how things go as it is.
2. Activate windows.
3.Make sure you have an antivirus program installed,if you dont already have one I would recommend microsoft security essentials,it's very good and free.
4.Update Windows.
5.Install useful programs I use like ccleaner and malwarebytes.

I looked at the ssd management thread.
I am conxerned about the turning off of pagefile. I heard that it is quite dangerous. No?

By the way, do you think software there is a software that would have an overlay and it would show how much each core is being used+ current clock rate?

You could use Tmonitor for clock rate and HWMonitor to check temperatures.

I would leave the pagefile,Buzz does refer to this again in the sticky "But again yes, there are so many write ups about it, that its best to either leave alone or spend a little time tweaking it according to your own needs."(post 40)

The pagefile setup will totally depend on your comp setup. IE : What drives are installed, and how fast they are. If you have only one SSD then leave the pagefile on, but if you have lots of ram you can lower the pagefile amount.

If you have an SSD and a fast HDD, you can move the pagefile to your HDD and either disable it on your SSD or just leave a very small pagefile on the SSD and the main one on the HDD.

You can do a trial and error on it, if you get a lot of crashes, just edit it. Usually a computer with lots of Ram will only need a small pagefile. I have an SSD and a HDD so my pagefile is on my HDD to lower Read/write operations on my SSD. NEVER get a crash.

Order of installation for me and my setup is usually

If not already on Network drivers installation first
then
Windows updates
Anti Virus
Firewall
Check Intel auto update
Check Nvidia Auto Update
Install sound card
Install Lucid Virtue
Install Ai Suite
Install core temp

Then I strip windows down and change any screensaver settings and wallpaper etc
Then install rest my programs and games.

Then sync my google account to get back all my bookmarks etc etc.
