I've decided to get a top spec PC with a budget of £3000. I've specced up both an AMD system and an Intel, and both come out roughly the same.

If you were choosing, which one would you select ?

Please note I do a lot of Video Encoding and a fair bit of gaming.

Intel Variant :-

Intel® Core™i7 Six Core Processor i7-8700k (3.7GHz) 12MB Cache
Motherboard
ASUS® ROG MAXIMUS X HERO: ATX, LGA1151, USB 3.1, SATA 6GBs - RGB Ready
Memory (RAM)

AMD Variant :-

AMD Ryzen 7 1800X Eight Core CPU (3.6GHz-4.0GHz/20MB CACHE/AM4)
Motherboard
ASUS® CROSSHAIR VI HERO (DDR4, 6Gb/s, CrossFireX/SLI) - RGB Ready!
Memory (RAM)

The common spec, for both systems, is as follows :-

32GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 3000MHz (2 x 16GB)
Graphics Card
8GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1070 - DVI, HDMI, 3 x DP - GeForce GTX VR Ready!

The Intel processor you have is much better, and is especially flagshipped as a gaming CPU.

And also, if you are gaming at 1080p, the 1070 will be perfectly adequate for running at high framerates at high settings. It even gets a pretty good framerate at one of the most high requiring games on this list, and gives the 1060 6GB a real thrashing, which is also a GPU commonly used for 1080p, but the 1070 is a good choice, look at the framerates for games including Overwatch, CS:GO, etc. in the link below.

Other than that, your build is fine. But do you really need 6TB of HDD space along with a 1TB SSD? You can save quite a bit of money if you were to decrease the HDD. You can save just over £100 if you decrease the 6TB Seagate Barracuda to a 3TB SATA and keep the 1TB 850 Evo (Your choice completely of course, if you think the space is worth it, go for it!).

Good luck with your build!

Edit: By the way, if you're going for the 8700K, I highly recommend that you pre-overclock your build here:

https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/overclocked-computers/

It will increase the clock speed on the 8700K from 3.7GHz to 4.8GHz. This will allow you to perform general CPU tasks faster and give you better gaming performance to top it off as well!

@Lockstar - Thank you very much for the tips there, excellent help.

@Slimcini - Now you've got me thinking. I will seriously look at your suggestion. I've been humming along with a 4 year old PC [bought here] that has never let me down and I am virtually ignorant about upgrade possibilities etc.

I can highly recommend SlimeCini’s build also, that will work and you can also get some really good 1440p 144hz monitors which will give you an amazing gaming experience from PCS for around £600-£700

Depends if you're primarily video editing or gaming really. A machine for 90% editing might benefit from a slightly different CPU

Thanks again for the additional info, from the both of you.

SlimCin, just a quick question. Would the operating system be automatically placed on the PM961, or would it have to go on the hard drive ?

I'm on post moderation, so not sure if my last post went through OK.

@SlimCini. would the operating system be placed on the PM961 by default by PC Specialists, or would it have to go on the hard drive ?

Many thanks in advance.

IGNORE, I've found the answer myself.

You specify when you order and it default suggests the SSD. You can change to hard drive if you want but why would you. You could afford the faster SM but I didn't put it in there because it's out of stock. I'd ring them and ask if it's going to be in shortly and get that if available.

The build looks very nice.

If going with the Inwin 303 I'd suggest getting 2 extra case fans as it seems the thing only has 1 as standard, even though the cooler adds 2 more (kinda).
