Transfer of old HDD with OS to new SSD

Hi all,

I am looking for some help. Before I progress I wonder if anyone can give me any advice on transferring a HDD from an old build to a new one and then transferring the OS from the HDD to the SSD.

I know the HDD transfer is possible to the new build but is the OS transfer advisable or should I just pay the £100 and get a new OS install.

Thank you in advance.

It depends what kind of windows license you have as to weather it can be transferred. If you bought it with the machine, it’s likely an OEM license that’s tied to the motherboard and therefor not transferable.

There is a way to tie the license to your Microsoft account in windows 10:

It’s not advisable to copy the old windows installation to the new build as it will have different drivers etc and conflict with the new components so a full install from scratch would be the way to go.

Appreciate that, thank you.

I think I will go with the fresh OS for what it is worth.

When I do the HDD transfer should I just wipe the full drive?

So the way I would do it would be:

1: format the new ssd and install windows.
2: install the HDD to a spare SATA port.
3: copy off any data if you have any on the HDD temporarily to the ssd.
4: delete all partitions and format HDD
5: transfer data back to hdd.

Then you have a perfectly prepared data drive going forward which will be nicely optimised.

Great, the reason I ask is that I am getting a new build from PCS however I am only opting for the 128 m.2 as I know I have this 1tb sitting in an old build so the new OS will come pre loaded on the m.2 so I will just need to add the HDD and take it from step 2 of your list.

Thanks again, I really appreciate your help with this.
