Transferring non-Steam games onto Steam

I have Euro Truck Simulator 2 but it's on a disk

Is there any way that I can transfer the game onto Steam? Then I can download stuff for it?

You can try to activate the game through steam using the CD Key, it does occasionally work (but not always)... If it doesn't, then you'd need to install it and then 'add a non steam game' to your steam library (won't do what I think you're looking for though, it'll just list it in your library)

What I'm looking for it to do is so that I can download dlc for it such as skins for trucks and there's a new cargo dlc for it. I guess it wouldn't work if I just added the non-steam game to Steam?

For that I would have to buy the game on Steam itself?

If I do this, how can I save my progress I've done on the game?

Thanks I may buy it again

Before anyone says anything. I don't want to mod because it destroyed my progress and I lost everything, so I'm not modding the game any more.

It will probably be cheaper in a Steam sale if you are willing to wait for one. I think I've seen it for £3.74.

Were you planning on playing the multiplayer mod? Because I think that is only available on the Steam version.

Would I have to restart the game again, or could I copy my data into the new folders once I've bought it from Steam?

I was planning on it actually, I would backup my data just in case though.

You may be able to copy your save files but the Steam version has had a lot of updates so it may not be fully compatible. The only way to find out is to try it
