Undecided between the Optimus IV and the Vortex III. Need advice

Hello all!

I've been toying with the idea of a new laptop now for a while now as my current one may be beyond help. (I've had to RMA it twice now as it did not come back repaired the first time -.- I don't think its chances are good). I like the idea of a custom built laptop clean out of the box without all the crappy bloatware. This will be my first custom built one and I have a few questions if someone will kindly grant me their wisdom :)

I will will be using the laptop for mainly multimedia, gaming, and I do like to mess around with Photoshop also. My budget is around 1200 though I can possibly squeeze 1300 if I think it's worth the money. I'll definitely be going for a 15 inch, I was quite happy with having a 15" previously. I've decided to treat myself on a AUO gamut screen whatever spec I eventually decide on. I do not need a blue ray drive as I don't think I ever used it on my previous lappy. (I seem to USB or stream or download it these days. I can always get an external one later)

I'm undecided between the Optimus IV and the Vortex III. Due to the nature of my work I travel a lot. My previous laptop started having problems after a long journey so a big concern of mine is whether the chassis on the Optimus will be robust enough or am I safer going with the vortex?

I already have my own ssd (m4 crutial 500g). Would it be possible to send it to PC specialists and have it installed for me? (Although I'm a bit scared to send it off
:p)

I do like lots of storage space so will a secondary 5400 drive be fine for this? Or should I just go for a 7200 drive anyway?

What's the big difference between the different wireless cards? Is it worth going for the killer series? Are they much better or is the difference negligible?

I'm undecided on which graphics card will be best for me. The games I'll mainly play will be WoW, Diablo 3, the Assassins Creed series a few others like Arkham Asylum. I'd like to future proof for games in the future and I see that the Vortex has multiple cards to choose from. I'm not fussed about super high detail settings as long as the framerate is smooth. Is there not much different performance wise or will it be noticeable if I go for a better card? I'm aware of all the benchmark tests and whatnot but I like some people's opinions.

Sorry if this seems like a wall of text, but I want to make sure for peace of mind and my sanitys sake that I won't start having second thoughts once I put an order in. I guess the bottom line is whether to go for the Optimus or the Vortex. Although I tend to take my laptop everywhere with me the size and weight won't bother me. (My previous laptop is a whopping 3.7 kg! Anything I get will be lighter :)

I've ordered my optimus IV, although my budget was a bit lower (900ish). It is said to be a very solid build and quite robust. The graphics card, although not as good as the 670/675M, will run most of those games on high settings with good frame rates. In my opinion, the 660M perfect and it sounds like your will be doing things similar to what i plan to use mine for. That graphics card should be good for the next few years aswell. Although do be careful because in the optimus the GPU is soldered down, so you wont be able to upgrade the graphics card (which probably wont be a problem with the 660M anyway).
As for the SSD, I'm not sure if you can send it to them. But you could just get the 5200 RPM HDD as your first hard drive with the operating system installed on it. Then when you get the laptop, put in your SSD in the !st hard drive slot, move the HDD to the 2nd hard drive spot, and move the operating system to the SSD. Hope that helps.
If your budget is 1200 though, you could get the Vortex with the 675M graphics card. But its really overkill for what you plan to use the laptop for. The 660M is in my opinion brilliant. Other than the graphics card, there isnt much difference between the 2 laptops (in the specs) other than the graphics. So you can either save money with a good, futureish proof graphics card or spend a good bit more on a better, more future proof one.

You'd have to call PCS about installing your SSD if you want two drives then you'd have to for go the optical drive in the 15" Vortex. But for your budget a 15" Vortex I7 8GB Ram 7970M is doable for sure like this your SSD would be the primary if PCS fit it for you and the Scorpio secondary

So in the 15" model'. There's no room for two hard drives AND a DVD drive?

I've fitted hard drives and reinstalled windows before, so I can certainly move them around as I need. It looks like its a lot easier to do with these laptops over my previous one which required me to literally take the key board off and rip it apart...

If you try to spec one with 2 hard drives it says you have to replace the optical with a hd caddy guess you could call PCS to check though I got a 17" Vortex for this reason the 15" Optimus will take 2 hard drives and a optical as well but the Vortex is far better for gaming

Ah, I see it now. If I want a DVD drive then I can only have 1 hard drive with 15" but I can have 2 with the 17" and the Optimus'. Thanks for pointing that out, though I think its just made my decision harder, I was leaning more towards the vortex :)

I've had a bit of a think, and now I'm looking at getting the 17" instead. I was worried it would be too big and heavy to travel with but I had a look at the dimensions and weight, its not much different from my previous cluncky Asus. I've never had a 17" before and I can imagine the bigger screen would be a joy to play on. I can also have a second hard drive and save money on the graphics card as I think it will be fine for my needs. I believe with the vortex I can always upgrade later.

Vortex III 17" AUO Matte
i7 3630
8g ram Kingston
500g Scorpio HD, 7200
Nvidia gtx 670m

I'd copy and paste the full spec but I cant get it to work on my tablet...
With this spec I can insert my ssd and reinstall windows on it. I think this will give me better value for money. Opinions?

Hi

I hesitate too between these models optimus IV/Vortex LE, before to decide me, I would like to know if it's easy to upgrade the vortex ? I mean in 2 years (for example), if I want to change the CPU (like an I7-3740QM) and the GPU (not idea now of which model), how can I be sure that all will be correctly recognize ?
Price of upgrade must be considerated too, but for the moment I imagine that nobody can tell the price of these components in 2 years :smartass:

Configs :

Optimus IV

I7-3630QM
2X4Go Hyper-X
GTX660M
733£

Vortex LE

I3-3120M (maybe I5-3230M but + 45£ on final price)
1x4Go samsung
GTX670MX
738£

I mean the only reason why I hesitate is the possibility of the vertex to be upgraded (and a little bit his very usefull powered USB). So what do you think ?

I would go for a machine, now, that you think will last you for three or so years. Upgrading in 2015 is an iffy prospect and might well not be cost-effective when it come to it.

I've decided on the vortex III 15" I was fine hauling my 3.8 kg Asus around so this will feel much better :)

And now to spend many hours on the configuration....I just hope I don't start having second thoughts getting the 17" o_O

I think if you travel a lot then the 15" makes a lot more sense. I have a 17" laptop (not PCS) at work and it is generally a pain when moving around. On trains or planes, cattle-class, it's hopeless and it's not much better trying to use it on my lap in a cafe or hotel bar or wherever.

I agree. Think of the 17" Vortex as a replacement desktop if you haven't much room.

I got my Vortex III back in November and i'm very happy with it. A couple of things have annoyed me with it like the edges at the bottom of the laptop by the track pad are a bit sharp and dig in to your hands, but now I have got used to it and position my hands differently.
The only other issue i'm having is with the internet which has only just recently started to happen so I don't know what is wrong.
Usually if the laptop is off or sleeping I can turn it on and go straight on the net instantly, but now for some reason when I turn it on the internet won't load for about 30 seconds, I know its not a lot but it bugs the hell outta me lol.

This is my spec I got

Is it worth going for the Raedon HD 7970 over the gt 675mx? I know the Raedon is superior graphics wise, but is it still plagued with driver problems or am I safer going for the 675 MX?
