I have a 5 year old computer, and one thing I've never really understood is you can unlock a 4th core. It already has four cores (AMD 965 I think), so what does it actually mean? Something like the 4th core is activated all the time as opposed to only when needed or something?

I think you might be able to disable a core or two in the BIOS...

you might be getting confused with some chips AMD released around then that were only triple core chips, I think it was a manufacturing fault so they just sold em as 3 cores and not 4. Some chips could activate the 4th core but it was a bit hit and miss if I remember rightly.
Same with modern BIOS flashing for GPU's you can turn a slightly lower spec card into a slightly higher spec card, but in short its not worth messing with unless you really just want to play with it.

Yeah its to do with the tri-cores AMD released which were made as 4 cores but there was a fault with one of the cores in a high percentage of them. So they sold them as tri-cores and many motherboard manufacturers added the option to enable the core at the risk of it not working correctly.
